to 'what content does OpenSim need?'.
I’d argue that Opensim isn’t lacking content, that seems to be flowing into the system at a healthy enough pace. What’s missing is the functionality and populated-area glue required to make that content truly useful.
I would like to see more exercise animations — I want to get in shape the easy way, through virtual exercise!
(Actually, I’m serious — it works.)
And, again, I’d like to add that OpenSim needs stuff to spend money on. I want to spend money on stuff in OpenSim for my company grid and company avatar.
you are right Maria! exercise visualisations do affect us – my subQuark was on the Canadian Olympic Fencing Team way back and they did something like an hour of guided visualisation per week and that was like 30 years ago!
I agree more animations are needed including better dance sequences such as Belly dance and Burlesque. There are odd single routines but we need sets of routines for particular types of dance. More general posses needed too since there are a huge number of possible actions from chopping wood to doing the ironing.
In the “need more sit poses” category… those of us who create animations and sit objects withdrew it from our stores when the opensim sit target position was changed (it broke the position). It may take another year for that level of creativity to rise again… time enough for creators to forget that experience :)
I think I have to agree with Lani on this one..to be honest, people complain a LOT that Opensim doesn’t have content..and it’s really not true. Opensim has a degree of difficulty above that of some other platforms, we all know this – I’m not arguing the fact that it gets easier all the time. Still, as a result of that particular barrier to entry, most of the population of Opensim still falls in the creative demographic. Within that demographic – as it’s always been – if we want or need something, we make it. If we don’t know how to make it, we learn how. This is one of the things that makes Opensim the perfect choice at this time for those of us who fall into that population.
As I’m a coder by trade, the content I’d naturally like to see is some advancement in the engines, particularly scripting. I’d also like to see real progress on the http_server functionality to allow better integrated communication. I think the best thing to be done about content is to make better content possible. This will cause the population of Opensim to create more and better inworld content.
Physics, to be possible to cross sims with not wearable vehicles!
All the rest can be found already and Open sims Allows more, like Npc’s and most of all, to hose easy a region or several without spending a single dime!
But a physic engine that allows to drive or sail would be the turning point.

“I would like to see more exercise animations — I want to get in shape the easy way, through virtual exercise!”
I agree. Not just for fitness, but there could be a lot of use for this in rehabilitation from injury and illness as well. SoaS could be used to give patients a visualisation tool to guide them through physiotherapy exercises.
Dance Animation it’s an obstacle to attract new ppl
We have a great setup already in a private Grid, but there isn’t interest without the power of joy and interaction, who a sequence of dances can give (in a dance party for example).
When I refer to dance animation, I mean REAL, SERIOUS, PROFESSIONAL work in animations, like those dance animations we loved from “Sinewave” in SL, all these years for example.
Those bvh files, that we can find free in the net are simply crap.
Animations must to have except MoCap equipment, talent, dance knowledge, art taste, correct timing and must be in a loop.
All those things can only be achieved from a real pro team, who knows and love virtual worlds.
Not from a professor or a students who doesn’t have a clue from dance.
Carnegie Melon it is for experimental purposes only, not for serious use in a Virtual World. (please stop refer to it, can’t stand to see this link everywhere we look).

great point ATupper! no central place for daily events – that’s the huge plus for Second Life
OSgrid and Kitely might evolve into that but it will take larger concurrencies and hypergridding as easy as intenet bookmarks

Dang! That would have been good on this poll! I’ll do another poll tomorrow with a link to QAvimator
Thanks Nebadon!

OpenSim needs a viewer based keyword search function (linked to “show in search” or some other method) to catalog the vast content already out there.
OpenSim needs a method for the creators of content to list and display what they have on the web, and exactly where to get it inworld.

Matina, you may want to try to contact DreamWalker – she does a lot in OpenSim now and used to do some heavy duty dance scripting in Second Life
the only contact i have for her is via LinkedIn
