website HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaSscript tools

phew, what a pain it is being so OCD! yesterday i mentioned why i’m doing a blog make over and once it is done, there should be very little different from the way it’s been for the last two years. it’s not so much in how it’s laid out that is being changed, it’s the workings of the HTML and CSS behind it all

and . . . i’m not starting from scratch – i found an HTML5 theme i like very much and am simply tweaking it. part of that OCD tweaking is rewriting the CSS to be neat and tidy (like placing the rules in alphabetical order – that’s OCD!) but a lot of that is done with free online tools like CSS Tidy Online and PHP formatters

there are other tools to use as well, such as an HTML validator (omg 166 errors! the last site only had 6 – so many errors to tackle!) and a JavaScript validator

so what motivates me to take hours upon hours (like all friday night, all saturday, and most likely most of sunday)?

css tidyyou do! yep, it’s all your fault – actually you are the rationale i use. cleaning up and properly formatting one CSS file created a 29.4% efficiency in that file! your PC/Mac/iPad/tablet/smartphone has to read/interpret all the files associated with a website and for a WordPress blog that’s a lot of files! bunches of PHP files, some CSS files, and a couple of HTML files PLUS the actual content (text and images) all carry overhead with them

i’m not trying to go all minimal, just efficient with what makes up this blog (and without becoming a super tech geek in the process – thank God for free online tools!) :-@

it’s not just prims and textures i obsess over! and thanks for bearing with the changes =)

  1. Enjoy modernising your blog. You encourage me to get off my patoodie and do the same for my stuff, plus finishing getting my sim up. My sim is all ready to exist again except for some very minor things, but I don’t do them and go running amok in the sun instead. So send some of that dedication and drive my way ;)
    I’m a slacker.

  2. i dunno Araxie, this is a huge pain and one of those things that you don’t really notice! i’m having second doubts but i guess i’ll muddle on – i’ve spent about 22 hours on this since coming home from work on friday!

if it ain’t broke, then maybe don’t recode it!

i have done zero work in-world – i have not even logged in yet this weekend!!! =(

but . . . it must be what i like to do! =)

running amock in the sun is not being a slacker! that’s real living! i think i’ll do a little gardening this afternoon – in the real world!

(it’s sunny here today so meet me out back to sit in a lounge chair and have a beer!} =)

  3. Would love to have that beer with ya Ener. I know what ya mean with the “if it ain’t broke stuff”, and spending way to much time needling over code. Enjoy that garden :)

  4. That’s not OCD, Ener, its attention to detail to produce a top quality product that people will actually enjoy. Look on your recoding of your blog as a break from your inworld works. Such breaks tend to refresh a person’s perspective, enrgy and desire to return to that other work.

    :-D

  7. phew that’s better. The temporary header was hitting my eyeballs a bit hard.
Interesting blog. I guess yes, HTML5 and mobile everything is the trendy thing now. Although I heard 5 is some way from ready, but with all those apple i-thing users, probably a must do. Personally, smartphone keys are too small for my hands, and the screens too small for my eyes, so I use an android tablet and get along fine, so long as sites don’t serve me a mobile app, I just want a normal web page. But all the survey figures seem to be saying smartphones are the first choice for so many people.
    Interesting times.
