want to do a sobering online assessment?

i had forgotten about this online tool until responding to a comment from Maria. it wasn’t directly due to Maria that this came to mind, it’s a survey i had taken a year ago

it’s pretty hardcore and measures your slavery footprint

true slavery – not Foxconn workers, that’s another issue

i’m bummed about my slavery score (below) and need to be bummed enough to do something about it (the site does have actions you can take)

some people won’t believe there are slaves, just like they don’t believe in evolution or global warming

what’s this got to do with OpenSim? we all use computers and should be aware of our impact in this world

  1. OK, the whole slave thing just confuses me. I’ve fought with Goreans aplenty over the years and now, another way to use the word ‘slave’. The history buff in me is livid @@

OK .. so you have 41 slaves …. sounds to me like it could be a whole lot worse, considering. But for one woman, its impressive. Now, not knowing just what kind of slaves your talking about ….. are these flesh and blood people? And I’m assuming they’re Foxxcon workers?

You got my curiosity all aroused and whatnot!!!

OK now for more cold coffee milk and trying to fix these outofmemory problems. Gonne wish I had a slave to beat fo this is all over (just kidding :-P)

  2. hi Crystal, i don’t know enough about how the slaves are defined – it’s on that website and is an interesting way to explore a topic i would never of even realised

i don’t know how accurate it is – certainly it has assumptions but i like anything that expands my perspective

as such, that site is simply a tool to help broaden my view point

and these are not Foxconn people (i do have an iPod gen 4)

these slaves are not virtual ones and this post crosses over from the virtual world to the real

tomorrow’s post is back in the virtual world =)

now about your mongo grid you are making – i’d love to see you document your work with maybe some flickr pics – i think your vision can help excite others =)

  4. “so you have 41 slaves” – I think they mean 41 work for her, but they work for other people as well. I don’t trust their figures but we probably all do use products that involved slave labour at source. Ask google about 21st century slavery. Estimates range from 12 million to 27 million worldwide – perhaps that does depend on the definition. Some are trapped in long term contracts, others, and their children, are actually treated as property.

  5. awww! 49 would be sooo many to develop! our 16 at Enclave Harbour sometimes seems sparse to me and i’ve been working on it for two years!

    25 is still HUGE!!!

thanks on the links keith – awareness is the first step and i agree that those numbers may be high but even one slave is one too many
