vehicle scripts in OpenSim kinda suck

lol, what a title! but it seems to be true! o_O

DreamWalker messed around with vehicle scripts last week and the best she did was have me laughing so hard that i thought i was going to pee myself!

ohoh_001edit

oh oh

so tonight i thought that i’d take a look around and see what i could find

SL vehicle scripts pretty much fail in OpenSim. mostly nothing happens, you get on and then nada, zip, silent fail

which is better than some of the stuff i was reading! like regions crashing and cars shooting up so high that you can’t delete them!

i only looked for about 20 minutes and found a boat script that worked very well and a car script that is great (scripts here, thanks Kitto Flora). i could not find any flying scripts which is a big boo, but i’ll look more later . . . i miss my Second Life helicopters and really enjoyed flying them =)

the car script handled just fine for my little segway ripoff, err, inspired GyroRider but has an issue that might be hard to resolve. when the vehicle is disembarked, it settles down to the terrain and not the prim it is on (like a roadway or the hangar tarmac where i make vehicles)

apart from that, i need to figure out how to stand on the thing instead of sitting, but that should be easy =)

  1. Yeah, I have that ZChopper from SL but crash my av everytime I try to use it in OS :D

Oh and I have a flying vehicle but it uses physical movement with llMoveToTarget (push the object to a vector) have not tried with VehicleParams. About your script, paste-bin it so I can remove the sit anim :)

  4. Newbie comment: ;) possibly a additional standing pose with arms forward would do that job better, but I dunno how to do it, sorry

  5. LOL – I want one! Saw several tourists riding them in SF; way cool!

  6. Ener, just a thought about it sinking. It looks like the root prim might be lining up with ground. Is there a chance the gyrorider can be rebuilt with a transparent under-prim that has the scripts? Just an idea.

  7. ho OSnewbie, yes, that would be ideal and the way to make the pose is to use qavimator =) i don’t know how to attach it, but if you have not tried qavimator, it is very easy to use and free!

hey Cristopher! i saw a segway tour also in San Fran, it was pretty cool to see – like ducklings following the tour guide. did you also see those crazy little three wheeled yellow tour motorcycle things?

hello Shang, i will try that! =) the script is in a big transparent block because the vehicle is so small it tips over forward otherwise! =D when you sit on it to ride, it raises up like in the video to look proper on the surface, so the prim does actually slide properly, it just sinks once you get off. it seems to be like the boat script, which “knows the water level (or maybe that just does 20 metres regardless?

  8. @Ener, another thought would be that you could used changed() to track whether the avatar was sitting or not and then forcibly set the object height after the avatar jumps off. I haven’t looked at the script yet.

  9. woof, you overestimate my scripting skills! =D i can just barely cut and paste!

that is a great tip, thank you – i will look at that tonight! =)

  12. duh.. missed one letter.. here is http://pastebin.com/E4zbGf3T it also uses some sounds and other stuff.. do you have them in the vehicle? :)

  13. no i don’t use any sounds, i have never done any audio in SL or OpenSim – sometimes i listen to an in-world radio, but that is it =)

i tried that script but still sit down, maybe i am doing something wrong? (lol, i am sometimes challenged by all of this) =)
