what a mess eh? i get very defensive of any smacking of subQuark. if he gets smacked, it better be by me! =p
i checked out that LinkedIn thing (i had blogged about it a few weeks back) with the IBM patent and that IBM lady was a bit cocky with subbie. she said he did not describe the patent accurately and all he did was quote her verbatim! then she said maybe we could patent a tiny aspect of our OpenSim work!
first of all, don’t say i make anything tiny! i just made a 122,000 pound landfill compactor that’ll run you over! =D *bring it on*
secondly, don’t be talking crap about patents if you are not prepared to have people ask about them. and thirdly, maybe refrain from giving free patent advice to others! derr . . .
well like IBM could give an eff what i think or what you think or the other 78,000 peeps that read this blog last year or the 8,300 for subQuark’s blog. i used to think IBM was the bomb with virtual work stuff (i was dumb, what can i say?). now i am leaning to the “big corporations suck” side (which is not true for all IBM peeps, i have had some nice dealings with Peter F. in the past) =)
subQ’s entire point was that there should be careful use of patents, not create more patents! he points to the same post i did from Crista Lopes, one of the originators of the OpenSim code, who makes a plea for corporations not to patent OpenSim processes. in a nutshell, patents can stifle and even kill neat projects like OpenSim
anyway . . . back to something more meaningful! backing your work up!
it’s a topic i keep posting about because your work is probably important. even if you don’t have your own server and can’t do OAR backups, you can still export your work with Imprudence. on stuff that takes me a few days or has pain-in-the-arse prim placements, i backup as i build – just like saving versions of other web work (like Flash or Word docs)
the exported xml and textures don’t take up much disk space and for discrete items, like my shiny new 205 prim Cat 836H inspired compactor, it is easy and takes only seconds
i lucked out on this build because i found a toy site that had loads of pictures from all different angles, even from underneath! =) *i think i’ll patent the process of using online images to build 3D learning objects* (me bitter? never!) =p

I’ve been thinking about writing a blog post summarising that LinkedIn thread since there’s some important stuff locked away in there.
Nice build that compactor! Wish I had the patience and skill to build something like that :-)

well, after seeing the debacle and slightly superior attitude exhibited (imo) by the one IBM lady, i am very ready to accepr “IBM is soo 2010″! =)
Wiz is the best, she is a wonderful and talented person who is a true joy to be around

sychronicity! i was just reading about Peter Finn (of IBM) where he mentions Ener Hax. anywayz. Peter predicts the ultimate demise of SecondLife if it fails to implement Hypergrid connectivity to the rest of the Open Sim Omniverse. /me thinks there are very salient points there.

thanks on the link! and thanks on the landfill compactor compliment (i so much prefer making that stuff than clothes and hair – i get super frustrated with clothes and i don’t know why?
and Peter Finn is a really great guy (plus he is Canadian – of course!). he ran that IBM grid for a while (v-business?) and he is very knowledgeable
he may have been part of the team that made that big news three years ago about making a teleport from Second Life to an intranet grid IBM was running
so how goes it my awesome avatar friend? =)

And yes, that is a compactor. Well done, I spent my last working years administering contracts for an earthmoving company.
Your build is perfect in detail!

wow! thank you! i used the specs from the Cat site to get close to the scale for things like wheel size and wheelbase but your endorsement makes my day! thank you =)
