too many moving parts in the SoaS kitchen

something i have been anxious about is playing out this morning with Sim-on-a-Stick – it’s getting too complex for me!

it always takes me an hour or two (or three . . .) to do an update and that’s because i watch Roger’s video for each one so that it is as clean as possible (and as small a download as possible). if you currently use it, the easiest way to update it is to use Diva’s Update function and that way you won’t be starting over with a new avatar and empty regions

the D2 Distro has changed a little compared to the version Roger’s video was created for but i can still follow along (Diva actually made it a bit more automated, you don’t have to type as many answers in)

once i “build” the first stage, i then go in and do Breen’s Port 9100 mod which avoids conflicts with other programmes like Skype. unfortunately, Breen’s link seems broken to his instructions! i *think” i remember his changes but maybe not fully because my final version of 0.7.3.1 has some issues! =(

but they are not consistent – i ran it once and it started right up and i could log in and walk around. but then i realised it blew past WhiteStar’s region chooser part. i then saw that there was a missing line of code so i put that back in. that did fire it up properly and let me choose my regions but then i was prompted with some opensim.exe questions as if it was running for the first time (things like “do you want to join an estate” which were already answered)

each time i test i start with a fully clean copy and a machine reboot. i ran it again and got two php fail dialogues but then it continued on fine! o_O

there are so many factors involved – like building it on an XP machine where you have to hack it to get an Open Command Window Here to appear (i used a registry hack in the past but went with PowerToys for XP this time – who knows, that change could have caused some of these issues!)

i’ll keep at it but it may get back to basics –  the entire purpose of sim-on-a-stick is to act as an easy entry point to OpenSim. after all, a good many of you have hacked it very well to do things like hypergridding and even to allow for concurrency!

lol, there’s something to be said about the simplicity of the first simonastick.com version:

  1. start mowes.exe
  2. run diva-r18611 > bin > OpenSim.exe (or OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe)
  3. launch your viewer

stay tuned – SoaS 0.7.3.1 will be out in one form or another!  =)

  1. dang, that was fast – my php errors were because my test folder name had empty spaces in its name – “test 2 of soas0731″

  2. When I see posts like this, I’m often reminded why I never fiddle with open source programs. I don’t have much patience anymore for dinking with code.

  3. Hi Joey! Thanks on the solidarity, I am a reluctant coder – only doing it when absolutely necessary. Just yesterday I learned that you can go to a line number in Notepad! Thank goodness for Google
