well Bernd Beyers has a bigger ego than Ener Hax! or maybe is more OCD! or both! =D
yes, my fleeting record of 576,000 prims only lasted 12 hours before Nebadon Izumi, OSgrid prez, shattered it with his million prims and now big shot Bernd did 2 million prims!
i guess i can take credit for lighting a fire under their butts because the old record had been around for two and a half years
leave it up to a girl to get guys to show whose is bigger! =p
am i bitter? not at all! *pounds fists on desk*
but i am envious of the freaking machine Bernd used! 24 gig of RAM! o_O
of course, his 2 million is using two machines, so it’s not technically not the same record Nebadon has =p
for myself and Nebadon, we were highlighting what can be done on someone’s personal machine, not on a commercial server and a separate client *power to the people* =D
what i was actually trying to show is that sim-on-a-stick is a viable alternative to Second Life as far as pure building goes (and classroom use)
ultimately, OpenSim is like WordPress from my perspective
you can run WordPress for free on your own box (analogous to New World Studio, Sim-on-a-Stick, and Diva D2 distro), use a hosting company like HostGator (Kitely or SimHost for OpenSim), or use a full-on commercial grid like InWorldz or Bernd’s Metropolis Grid (ie, pay a marketing company to run your blog)
when i first came over to OpenSim, no one would tell me (and i could not find) what was comparable to a Second Life sim. i kept hearing about 45,000 prims on an OpenSim region but that does not mean OpenSim is three times more efficient than Second Life! using that as a benchmark set me up to think OpenSim was not very good . . .
finally i figured out that a sim is about 1 cpu core and one gig of RAM (derr, like how Second Life servers are set up!). the 1:1:1 rule is still a good rule but not entirely accurate. Second Life uses other servers for inventory, mapping, voice, IMing, media, and accounts. you have to handle that yourself in OpenSim
our SimHost box with a 4 core cpu and 8 gig of RAM is close to 4 “super” Second Life sims. maybe four 30,000 prim regions (depending on so many factors like prim types, textures, scripts, etc). we run 16 regions but i always think in terms of 4 “normal”sims with the rest being a mix of homestead and openspace
but the mass of people don’t have a server to use and don’t have uber unglaublichen computers (ha, my family name was Müller way back when) =D
i’m interested in helping the average person try OpenSim to see if it works for them. to me, sim-on-a-stick is that tool – easy to use (relatively), certainly as inexpensive as possible, and capable to act as a first step into OpenSim and very capable as a single-user world
thus the 125,000 prims showing that a mediocre machine – a 6 year old dual core, 3.5 gig of Ram, NVidia 9600 – does sim-on-a-stick just fine (the 576k was on an i7 8 core/8 gig box)
realistically, i feel comfortable saying that 30,000 prims is possible and highly usable and thus, sim-on-a-stick is a good way to experience creating in virtual worlds
world records are nice and a lot of fun, but affordability and accessibility float my boat =)
Herzlichen Glückwunsch Bernd!
we should keep pushing the prim limit because those things stretch the imagination and help make dreams a reality (like landing on the moon!) =)

Its sort of like comparing the performance of a Ferrari against a Volkswagen, isn’t it?

lol, go Sarge go! =D
how did we get stuck with the VW? well it could be worse . . .
your workstation looks pretty sweet though and i’m happy with mine and as long as we can do what we like, well . . . life is pretty darn good! =)

Yep. The important thing is that this all shows the capabilities of OpenSim (and AuroraSim :-D ) Though I haven’t tried for any maximum prim use with Aurora.
I will add that I think that we show the benchmark for the average FutureShop-Best Buys-WalMart-user while Bernd shows the upper end.

I see Bernd used an octacore processor.
You get those when you cross an octopus with an albacore :)

Actually, seems this is what you’re up against

lol on the octopus and HOLY CRAP on the 8.429GHz cooled with liquid nitrogen!

Actually, a good portion of Nebadon’s were mesh so they weren’t actually prim prims..so I’m not sure how good a comparison his record is to yours anyway, Ener.

i second that opinion! prims are prims and if the record is dealing with prims, well then prims they should be
