the day my world stopped spinning

kind of a dramatic title but all my Omega spinning scripts stopped today!

i finally had some time to hop into Enclave Harbour and do some detail work and i noticed that l’ascenseur was in my home sim! that’s the first time i have seen this in Kitely

l’ascenseur was scripted years ago by Micheil Merlin back when we were on our own server with SimHost. at that time, Enclave Harbour was 16 normal sized sims. in Kitely, we are one Advanced Megaregion and that’s probably what caused l’ascenseur to get shifted over

in its scripting, it has a notecard with absolute coordinates that are used by a path following script (so those coordinates would now be read from the bottom left most sim since it is the root sim now and thus not the original sim l’ascenseur was in). this hasn’t shifted until today, so my guess is an OpenSim upgrade since the last time i logged in?

thanks goodness i don’t do much scripting or maybe a bunch of stuff would have been moved! *dang, forgot to check the zip line!* =\

anyway, it was easy enough to move l’ascenseur back and i simply deleted the scripts in it (they were no longer working anyway)

while i was doing that, i noticed that none of my spinning omega scripts were working either! =(

that’s a first too and somewhat annoying because i don’t know how to reset them except to go to each object (but it was NOT as annoying as that change in OpenSim a few years back that shifted every sit position by 90 degrees! do you remember that? ugh!) =p

so just for fun, i decided to film me doing the spinney resets using FRAPS and then editing it to double speed in Sony Vegas. this way the task wasn’t so bad and it gave me a chance to use FRAPS

anyone else out there in Kitely find any strange changes like these?

ps – when i named the video No Spin No Cry, i got Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry stuck in my head – Joan Baez (supposedly a distant cousin) has a funky cover of it here

  1. Hi Ener,

Have you checked if this problem occurred again after a world restart?

  2. hmm, it never occured to me to restart! would that affect both things you think? the object moving and the omega scripts?

sit scripts and particle scripts were running normally

thanks Ilan for the great tip (although if that is the issue and not an upgrade, does that mean this could happen again for visitors?)

  3. It may have been an initialization timing problem that prevented them from running after the sim started. A restart may have solved the problem in that case.

We’ll be upgrading to OpenSim 0.7.6 within a couple of weeks, which may reduce the likelihood of this type of problem occurring.

  4. wow Ilan! that’s great about 0.7.6!

i’m sure that’s quite a process (updating SoaS maxes me out so i can’t even imagine what’s involved for you guys!)

  5. Have you got the zip line still working? I never took a copy of the script.

  6. hi Nikki, yes it is still there! but . . . it’s locked and now in my name (has been since the move from Reaction Grid to SimHost) and the perms don’t allow me to open the scripts =(

if you know a way to crack that, i’ll see if i can export it for you

it’s a great script and your animation with it is superb (but also not accessible)
