Space Base Workstage – freebie OAR

after watching Ms Booth’s latest video and seeing the use of the Giant Tree by so many students, i thought about the open building platforms it has and how it’s nice to have defined places to do tasks. OpenSim can be too much of a blank slate and it can be a good thing to guide others in what they should do (ie, a specific task like “go build a barbie on the space ship . . . them build some shrimp!”) o_O

space-base_016editi did some 3D doodling this weekend (recovering from a mild cold and fever – bah!) and made a huge UFO that is basically a round platform to build on and it is set on an alien island

the ship is hollow and is not detailed but has a scripted top that goes up and down on a touch. there are two versions of it in the OAR – a hovering (or blasting off) version and a landed one. both could be used as building platforms for school projects . . .

the region can be visited at Kitely here for the next few weeks

all the world’s a stage =)

  1. That looks to be just what Quinquifid needs for a mobile workshop in the Time Vault — splendid work!

I hit a snag, though: the download link on http://enerhax.com/oars/spacebase.html currently refers back to http://enerhax.com/oars/spacebase.html so the OAR file cannot be downloaded.

While there I spotted an oopsie in the banner: opesim freebies?

    I hope this is helpful.

  2. oh noes! i have been sick so i will blame that!

    the link is now fixed:

  4. you are welcome and i am feeling better (enough to be at my day job!) =p

very cool on Time Vault (thank you for the link) – it would be an honour if you used any of my stuff. i love steampunk and things like zeppelins (the freebie shark one in have used to be zebra-stripped and more steampunkish)

    =)

  5. oh Dot, you had really good steps online for doing the megaregion stuff that dealt with ghost prims but i can’t find the link

    i have this

    https://getsatisfaction.com/kitely/topics/preparing_and_exporting_a_megaregion_to_kitely

    and

    http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Setting_Up_Mega-Regions#Steps

i have someone using the 0.7.5 SoaS that is having the phantom prims issue with objects not in the root region

does that second link take care of that? (i think so but am confused as to why the 4 region SoaS is doing this)

  6. This was the list developed for the previous version of SoaS:

    CombineContiguousRegions to false
    Restart Opensim
    Load each OAR as described
Save raw files (if not already saved)
Shut down, then change CombineContiguousRegions to true (you don’t need to change anything else)
    Restart Opensim
    Run fix-phantoms
    Run backup
You should be able to save the megaregion OAR at this point, but I can see why you might do a belt-and-braces and restart

    Here’s the thread: http://forum.devokan.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=287

The key element is “Run fix-phantoms”, as described in the OpenSim wiki article you linked to.

  7. thank you Dot!

so how about using SoaS 4 region which has combinecontig set to true, should that be able to export a one single megaregion that could be uploaded to Kitely as a 4 region world?

or is the export of megaregions not yet natively supported?

the scenario i was envisioning is that a person could work on a multiregion SoaS (4, 9, or 16) and then export it as a single megaregion OAR

btw, thank you for your expertise on this, i do not take it for granted =)

  8. Hi Ener,
We think this is exactly the problem we have: we are trying to create an OAR of just one region in a SoaS 4 combined regions (megaregion) but not especifically of the root-region.

When we do it, we get the terrain but not the objects on it. Apart from this, we’ve realised that in the non-root-regions, the region doesn’t identify the prims when opening the menu About Land (we use Imprudence).

We’ve taken some pictures to make it clearer.
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0oRuUJXpsPqYTUxaGlDblZJdms/edit?usp=sharing
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0oRuUJXpsPqYzJaOFlaZDhNLVU/edit?usp=sharing

We’ve detected this problem in both SoaS versions 0.72 and 0.74, since they are the ones we need.

    Let’s keep in contact.

    Best wishes.

  9. okay, so you DO NOT want to make one single megaregion OAR (as in for use by Kitely) but want to make individual standard 256 metre OARS?

the end result is that you would like to have four individual OARs, one for each region =)

i think that changing the CombineContiguousRegions to false should take care of your issue

the links i gave you are for making one single megaregion OAR for use to import into Kitely – a very specific situation

but you want to take a four region SoaS and make it behave like four individual regions (sorry if i sound redundant, but i already misunderstood what you wanted and gave you incorrect info)

so let’s try this (thank you for your patience) =)

    let’s change CombineContiguousRegions

quit OpenSim and MoWeS and change:

    soas07# > diva-r###### > bin > config-include > DivaPreferences.ini

find the line that says – CombineContiguousRegions=true and change it to false and save it

for 0.7.2 and 0.7.4, that should be the only place (for 0.7.5, Diva changed it to make that line also be in the MyWorld.ini file). you may want to double check to make sure that the combine line is not in the MyWorld.ini file because it will override the other

this one change should make each OAR its own individual 256 metre X 256 metre OAR. you will need to change to root OAR in order to save out each OAR. that is done like this in the console window

    change region simonastick 2

    and then do

    save oar c:soas2.oar

et cetrea (it sounds like you already know this) =)

this post shows changing the combine thing and the regions

    http://iliveisl.com/changing-regions-loading-oars-for-sim-on-a-stick/

    phew!!! =p

    i sure hope this works!

if it does not, i would be glad to try splitting your OAR if you trust me with it (i promise i would not keep any copies or give them to anyone – i have too many as it is!!!) =)

good luck and let me know, i am certain this can be done

PS – very cool that you have the viewer in Spanish and i also like the hair and skirt you have for Simona!

  12. Hi again,

First of all, thanks a lot for your interest and patience.

Indeed, what you’re suggesting in your post is what we’ve already done… and we’ve been unable to solve the problem. We assume the reason is that the regions are full of prims before changing “CombineContiguousRegions” to false, could it be? We think it could work if we change this value before setting the prims. So our next step will be to restore both regions ( two different projects which we want to put together into just one sim) into a new 4-separated-region OpenSim, since for the moment we have them in two separate Opensims.

Anyway we will be pleased to send you what we have done till now, maybe you could give us any useful advises… we are teachers who love new technologies and try to use them as much as possible. We are very interested in 3D worlds and their possibilities as a motivating learning resource.

We were glad to read your comments about our avatar’s clothes and so on, and we really want to thank you for your work. Would you like to see some pìcs about our latest project (Kosmos Isle)? http://goo.gl/P3rkX We’d truly appreciate your opinion and you’ll see that we couldn’t avoid to use your rocket… it was perfect for the occasion!! (we hope you don’t mind).

Thanks a lot and let’s keep in contact.

    Best wishes.

  13. Sorry for the delay. I’ve only just tried saving a megaregion OAR in this new version of SoaS and wanted to make sure megaregion OARs were working before replying.

As Imma suggests above, set CombineContiguousRegions (CCR) to false first, then load single-region OARs to the individual sims as usual, using the final desired layout.

To save a megaregion OAR you don’t even have to change CCR to True — keep it as false.

    In console, simply type:

    save oar --all megaregion.oar

    and that will do it.

Now for a bit of extra magic: In this version of SoaS with CCR=False you can load a megaregion OAR you saved in Kitely (I turned of Advanced Megaregions before saving it), replace one of the single regions with a new OAR, then save the result as a new megaregion OAR using the above command.

  14. The kids are going to LOVE this! You are brilliant Ener =D
PS:I am presenting a lecture on my learning journey with Sim-on-a-Stick at my university in a couple of weeks. I have 4 of my young students also speaking on their use of virtual worlds and this is a huge thrill for them.

  15. so cool Kate!!! what an awesome experience for those students – you have such passion! =)

thanks on the kind words for the work base – i tried to make it gender neutral (lots of spherical shapes balance the inherent masculinity of rockets) and everyone like scifi stuff =)

good luck with your presentation – will it be recorded?

you are inspiration to many teachers (i’ve had at least a half dozen email me and mention you) =)

  16. thanks Dot! i need to turn your comment into a post – that’s very handy info to know!

from what you explored, it sounds as if CCR could always be left to false since there is a megaregion oar command! (i did not know about that – or forgot – that’s really useful)

    =)

  17. Hi Ener, I think the lecture will be recorded (they usually are) but will check. I think you deserve an honorary doctorate from the School of Education =D
