sim restart update

one comment

woohoo, wow, so the sim restart post made some waves. who would of thunk it!  =)  there are a lot of wrong ideas out there and the commentors made me look up what i was sharing (and this is a good thing cuz i certainly could be wrong)

after all, a blog is a web log, or an online diary so how seriously should you take a pink-haired winged avatar? beats me, but with google right here, you can check out anything i blab about (oh Lord, i can blab)  =p

there is no doubt that i can get things wrong – the day i don’t get things wrong is the day i either think i know everything or i actually do know it all (so on that day, you can call me God)

okay, so i took some time to look up info that you can decide on for yourself as to how valid it is

it was hard to find information! my two commentors did not offer any links, just opinion, so they were about as worthy as me!

first off, it’s a Region Restart not a sim restart, derr

secondly, Linden does say that sim restarts don’t fix much and should only be done when instructed (see the dialog box in the original post). now that does not mean they don’t do anything, just that Linden recommends that you only do them when instructed to – the commentors know more than i do on this, i am not sure what all it does

then about sims moving. this one is easy to test (if you own a sim), and if anyone claims they own a sim, they can try it for themselves. all you do is look at Help > About Second Life and you can see your server number

so like Junior Mythbusters, i took a screenshot at 6: 23 pm tonite, did a restart, and took a screenshot at 6:27 pm

the results indeed show that sims do get moved! (phew!)  =)

tadah! *me so smart!*  =D

  1. Wow. Go on vacation for a bit and miss all the excitement!!!

Actually, I expect there is some validity to everyone’s comment.

If software was perfect, you’d never need to restart, reboot or whatever the correct terminology applies to a situation. Also, heavy activity tends to find the bugs in any software and would increase the likelyhood of having to attempt to ‘fix’ it with a restart.

I’d be surprised if LL said you ever needed to do a restart. If you accept the argument that perfect software would never need to be restarted, telling you to restart it is sort of admitting your own faults. We all do that don’t we :).

There were some comments regarding MS windows. Maybe I misread the comments. But SL runs on Linux. Debian GNU/Linux actually I read somewhere. Opensim runs on Windows and Linux. I’ve understood that most development for Opensim occurs on Windows but that is just from comments in blog posts. I don’t know the relative numbers of Windows and Linux implementations of Opensim.
