102 countries have visited and downloaded sim-on-a-stick with 78% on Windows, 14% Mac, 3% Linux, and 26% of visitors came in from search results
42% came as direct referrals, so that would be links both on this blog and anyone else publishing the link. the remaining 32% was from directly typed URLs, which probably means they read about it somewhere
historically, from the start of the sim-on-a-stick site back on december 5th, 2010, the overall average time on the site is 4 minutes and 36 seconds! of course, downloading a big file takes a while!
back to that 26% of all traffic coming from search results - all the terms are directly related such as ”sim on a stick” (33.1%), ”simonastick” (32.9%), and even “simona stick” (2%) but no one used the terms ”OpenSim” or “virtual worlds”
i’m not sure what to make of these metrics except that the search terms used make me feel like OpenSim is even more niche than i thought

Ener – have you tried searching on “opensim” and looking through the results for SoaS? I went through the first 3-4 pages on google, and it’s not there. That’s why you aren’t getting hits from the “opensim” search term. It’s because Opensim is LESS niche – and therefore search results real estate is at a premium :) Actually, I think this says good things about SoaS in general – it’s a tool that people check out directly when they hear about it. “Opensim” and “Virtual World” are really VERY general terms when you think about it. Yeah, Opensim is a specific platform, but it’s still a platform – with the gods KNOW how many grids running on it all over the world. It’d be like doing a search on “Linux”.

nice perspective ELQ
i suppose i was surprised because “ener hax” and opensim are fairly well represented in searches and i expected more carry over to sim-on-a-stick
although it does my ego good to see my name (abvatar anyway) associated with OpenSim, my real joy is in hearing about people trying it out – that really floats my boat
lol, maybe my avatar’s ego is so big that i assume people will immediately go “that’s Ener” whenever they see a Raggedy Ann pink haired avatar! =D
i suppose it doesn’t help that the SoaS sites are always big image maps with no text for search engines to read!
thanks ELQ and Sarge – i just want everyone to find the same joy that you two and myself have found with OpenSim/Aurora-Sim =)

I dunno, maybe there’s less of a search-engine/brand connection between them, but there’s definitely some talk going on about SoaS. I myself was speaking to a RL client a couple weeks ago and mentioned Opensim and he had no clue, but he knew what I was talkin about after I mentioned sim-on-a-stick! :D
