claiming the installer version of Sim-on-a-Stick as official just means i created a new graphic and index page for it =)
over the last year and a half (actually 20 months if you’re counting or OCD) the website for it has evolved both in version of OpenSim and in content (they are still all online and each new version has a link to the previous version)
the first one was for OpenSim 0.7.0 and had four different downloads, links to US and Canadian Amazon and NewEgg for the official SoaS USB stick, and even a PDF of instructions
the second SoaS site was iPad-inspired and offered only two versions – one with a viewer and one without for OpenSim 0.7.1.1
the third site, for OpenSim 0.7.2, was one of my faves with Ener being posed like a WWII nose art girl sitting on the neat Corsair USB. Corsair is also the name of a US WWII airplane so i liked the double entendre
the fourth site was fun for me because it included TinTin’s Destination Moon rocket and wove my inner child into the OpenSim 0.7.3 version of SoaS =)
the next one was a mod of the TinTin rocket site and simplified the options for OpenSim 0.7.3.1
the sixth, and current, site is not for a new version of OpenSim but for a new way to install it. this website is the simplest yet and is 100% HTML5 with code on the downloads to get exact numbers (i had a formula before that calculated downloads and was purposely conservative by as much as 20% – i don’t want to inflate the numbers)
i enjoy making the new page for new “versions” and this one may be my new favourite – it’s clean, lightweight, and minimalistic
some might find it too minimal but that is partly on purpose
you need to have a little bit of knowledge and a desire to persevere to use Sim-on-a-Stick. there isn’t a drop dead simple way to fully install OpenSim yet and the easiest way to setup your own configuration is with New World Studio. SoaS and NWS are intended for two different audiences. SoaS is meant to provide a portable preconfigured personal studio to the OpenSim enthusiast and works very well as a standalone tool for students to use in making projects that they can then share via demonstration, photo, or video
SoaS is not for the total n00b that is wondering what virtual worlds are about – the best thing for them is to create an account on OSGrid or someplace like InWorldz or 3rd Rock Grid. i’d also recommend Kitely if there is a specific destination or event they are looking at
Sim-on-a-Stick lets the novice and expert easily deploy an instance of OpenSim. it’s that version of OpenSim you can launch from your USB drive when you’re waiting for someone at a lunch spot and have 10 minutes to work on a project. i use it to build freebies and create personal sims that i may someday deploy on Kitely. if you find yourself with your laptop and a wifi connection, you can download SoaS and be in-world within two minutes after completing the download
this latest version is the “0.7.3.1i” version which simply means that a genuine installer is now available. the installer makes the process of getting the SoaS files a bit simpler in a way that may be familiar to more people than the previous zipped method. the end result is the same – a preconfigured instance with a master avatar named Simona (you go girl!) =D
i’ll write a post dedicated to the use of the installer this week, today’s post is a look at the evolution of SoaS – one that has been moved along with a lot of great community input – and an announcement that the installer is complete! =)

i have installed the soas. nice, it is very large. for those that are use the second life viewer (3.3+) all you do is make a copy of your icon, rename to something nice, and put this in:
“…SecondLifeViewerSecondLife.exe” –loginuri http://127.0.0.1:9100/
you can right click, and go to the properties menu.
my version of sl viewer didnt do an exit so i have to shut it down myself.
most other allows you to use the setting for localhost, so you dont have to worry.
now that is for the meshes users only. otherwise, you can use anything you want.
now have to figure out what the meshes for avatar is. i got a mesh (JBD) for a girl. it looks good and there are a few thing for the joint body design (BJD), but not enough stuff.

oh christ. i am kooky. its bjd for ball-joint design.
but still the same thing: we need a mesh avatar to be redefined so the new stuff will be attached.

hi bristle, that is an awesome tip on how to use viewers without a grid manager! i should include that in a post this week when i run through the installer in a video
hmm on that spelling – something about too many joints is my guess!!! =p
but i can’t talk, i am the queen of typos! =D

I’ve been watching your soas work and enjoying your travels and travails a great deal and waiting for access to a win computer to try it out …. yay – got soas working today – no problems
Used the installer, have downloaded and changed the oar a couple of times without too much problem, just patience and attention, crazy to watch it in action. I’ve started wondering how I can combine bits from one oar with bits from another, looks like a merge is possible.
I’ve no special soas plans but must say it’s odd to realise your in your own world (iyow), spooky.
Thank you Ener, appreciated so much. Moongold

thanks Moongold, your words mean a lot to me and i am very glad it works for you =)
i have seen the command for merging tow OARs but have never tried it. it may work very well but with my builds, i would anticipate a big mess! i would tend to export discreet parts of one OAR and import them into the other but that depends on things like scripting
you can make pretty large linked objects and have good results importing them
let us know how it goes (and it is weird being fully in your own world knowing that knowing can ever pop in – but it’s also nice if you want to focus on building or scripting =)
