new to OpenSim? curious about how to dip your avatar toe in the open sea?
we have all been n00bs at one thing or other (unless you were born an adult) and it’s exciting learning new things. OpenSim is a fun and vastly creative tool and can be used for many different things
if you have a PC you can easily and cheaply (free) try it out with Sim-on-a-Stick (SoaS)
what is Soas?
it’s a unique deployment of OpenSim that is self-contained running in a package that acts as a mini-server. it has its own MySQL, PHP, and web server (Apache) instances that are all wrapped up into one folder ready to go =)
i don’t know my SQL from my PHP and you don’t need to know them either!
SoaS has been download over 14,000 times and is used by virtual world enthusiasts all around the real world from 3D content creators to educators to the US military (SoaS is used by the US Department of Defense and the US Air Force Institute of Technology and the Center for Cyberspace Research) *oooh* =p
here’s what you’ll need to run it – a computer with XP, Vista, or Windows 7 with at least a gig or two of RAM and a dedicated graphics card. i’ve run it for over a year on a five year old XP box without any problems. be sure to be up-to-date on Windows Updates
if you have used OpenSim, or been in Second Life, then you are a pro and know all this stuff
if you are new to OpenSim, then i hope this works for you and that you find the fantastically creative outlet i have =)
here’s a quick video (3:16 including the viewer download – large player link - much crisper) showing you what to expect and how easy it can be to get started in OpenSim. if you are totally new, the viewer from SoaS is filled out and only needs the login button clicked! see you in-world! =)

[...] How to upgrade your grid By Chris Collins A new version of OpenSim was recently released, OpenSim 0.7.4. There’s an upgrade function built into the Diva Distro version of OpenSim and its derivatives, including Sim-on-a-Stick and New World Studio. The updated version of the Diva Distro came out this past Wednesday, and the new Sim-on-a-Stick was released yesterday. (Check out the great getting started video from Ener Hax.) [...]

Wonderful video! I’ll add it as soon as possible!
Both versions work well for me.
What do you think of this solution: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18035866/sim-on-a-stick.jpg ?
You can easily choose a viewer (Cool VL and Nirans did not want to connect)
Thank you for your great work!

i love portableapps! =)
very nice use of their launch menu and i like what you did very much!
i see you use the 32 bit launch, are you having any issues with opensim.exe? i’ve only been using that one for the last 6 months on Widows 7 machines and just curious

Yes, opensim.exe didn’t work for me (I used the new download, 64 bit PC).

hmm, what is your machine’s configuration? i like keeping track of that type of information because i do look into it and see if i can figure anything out
i’ve been using opensim.exe on XP, Vista 64, and Windows 7 and that is on 3 different machines (hardly a thorough testing suite)

Hi Ener, Win 7 64bit, and it is the USB-Version (not the Install-Version).

hello robert – yes, it is possible but i have never done it
since this is the D2 distro of OpenSim, it is built to hypergrid
the only info i have on it is from this post referencing a German one
