Sim-on-a-Stick 0.7.4 hack – 1 region to megaregion to 4 regions

SoaS 0.7.4 has undergone further testing and is running nicely. Breen’s mods even allow Apache to run on a machine that has IIS turned on. Apache isn’t a show stopper for sim-on-a-stick but is needed for the Wifi admin panel if you want to create additional users

the default configuration for sim-on-a-stick has been one single 256 metre by 256 metre region for the last two versions. this was based on community feedback and to keep it straightforward for region building (no need to change regions for terrain textures and OAR saving)

however, the default Diva D2 distribution is as a 2 by 2 megaregion. the advantage of this is that there are no sim crossings to slow you down. however, since one goal for SoaS is to be a gateway drug starting point for people just beginning to explore OpenSim – having a single “standard” 256 metre region is a good way to go

i prefer one region for my stick-based projects for easy OAR saving & loading

but . . . if you want SoaS to be a 2 by 2 megaregion, there are two easy ways to hack it back into that default setup

you only have to do one of the two following things to turn one region into a megaregion. with OpenSim and MoWeS closed, navigate to [drive]:\SoaS074\diva-r20232\bin\Regions

  • rename RegionConfig.ini to RegionConfig.ini.1region and rename RegionConfig.ini.4region to RegionConfig.ini

OR

  • remove the semicolons from RegionConfig.ini as illustrated below

once you have done either hack, start sim-on-a-stick like normal and voila! =)

if you then want to change your megaregion into 4 standard regions, you can do that too! o_O

exit OpenSim and MoWes, then navigate to [drive]:\SoaS074\diva-r20232\bin\config-include and open DivaPreferences.ini with Notepad

find the line that says – CombineContiguousRegions=true and change it to false and save it. now you’ll have four standard 256 metre regions *wicked k3wl!* =D

one to four

method one

one region to one megaregion

method two

  1. [...] Sim-on-a-Stick 0.7.4 hack – 1 region to megaregion to 4 regions – sep 7 change one region to a 2×2 megaregion to four 256 metre regions [...]

  2. Um, just to be a bit of a stick in the mud, but the WiFi is not necessary to create accounts. You can do so using the console or server commands. In fact, since SoaS runs OpenSim, then a person can use all of the server commands.

ps- am i just dense, but are many of your posts on Excelsior Station set so that comments can’t be made? i know i have made comments in the past, but yesterday i wanted to leave one and could not figure out how!

  4. No, comments are enabled. The structure is sort of like yours here. A main starting page which has each article, but commenting takes you to a separate page with the posting on it. I’ll go over things, make sure I haven’t typo’d something.

  5. Some pages/sections/articles don’t have comments enabled, like the Myriad RP page, since it only has the IAR on it, I see no point in comments there :-)

  7. Works well :)

USB sticks actually just translate to “run from memory”.

At work we have converted our backup servers to preconfigured linux on a stick. IE a USB bootable operating system. And the harddrives are just seen as usb drives (sata PnP).

Our graphics dept are now receiving digital photos in the 12mb – 25mb range. Dozens per day.

Removable media is the way of the future I tell ya!

  8. i agree, removable media is so convenient and easy from the user perspective

prices are coming down but still need to drop more (my 120 GB SSD was a deal at $89 usd, but that is still too costly)
