apart from feeling an urgent need to update sim-on-a-stick based on WhiteStar’s recommendation (because i am very high strung), i also have family in town and just came back from driving for 11 hours around Maine! but . . . i created the new build in the morning, or perhaps i should say i tried to create the new build but after two hours i was having challenges with it =(
so . . . the new version (0.7.3.1) is what i am calling a back-to-basics version! it’s only one 256 x 256 region and is manually started (launch mowes, then launch OpenSim.exe – not terribly complicated!). it does lay in Breen’s port 9100 hack but there isn’t a batch file to use for starting or a region chooser. i’ll be messing with that later – maybe this week, maybe next . . .
the 0.7.3 region chooser version is still online – i archive all past sites and each site has a link to the previous site and the downloads are also all there
keeping in mind that sim-on-a-stick is supposed to be simple and as uncomplicated as possible, packaging this B2B version meant less explanation was needed (it is what it is)
speaking for myself, i know that if something gets too involved i simply won’t do it or i’ll dread doing it. kind of like that New World launcher – that is a seriously great tool but it takes a huge effort to update it and that’s why it was two major versions behind until a month ago
keeping sim-on-a-stick simpler means that i can do updates even if they are just minor ones

Very nice, Ener! Simplicity is best and feature creep is unavoidable with any application as useful and popular as SoaS :) I think going back to basics is a great idea, and will help you assess just what you want to do with it and how involved you want it to go.
You know, most projects with a life-span of more than a year tend to go back to basics once in a while – if not in the available product, certainly on the development side. It helps keep things fresh and allows new perspectives on the project. I always include “New App Mode” in my development cycle specifically for this reason. I’ve found it helps me keep things simple, easy to use, and backward-compatible :)

I was thinking, maybe it was time for two versions, the KISS version and the CleverClogs version. Or perhaps more correct but dull, the basic and advanced versions. Sounds as though it has worked out that way. After all, if the simple version is working, that’s job done really, and anything more complex becomes optional.

One region oughta be enough for anyone.
I run mysql on my region and just updating the MySQL connection string and putting my region file in is quite enough!!

@Ener:
These instructions are for Ener Hax regarding Updating SOAS.
———————————————————–
* create your directories as you normally do.
* copy over the Master \bin\Regions\RegionConfig.ini to your new Bin\Regions directory.
* copy “Choose32.exe”, “inifile.exe”, & “SOAS_Start.bat”
to your new SOAS distro. IE: “soas0731″
* edit the SOAS_Start.bat at Line 10
change this to the new bin path. IE: set BinPath=.\diva-r18611\bin where r18611 changes according to diva’s distro.
save the file.
* start & test your installation as you normally would do.
* All done !
Have a great day building and being creative !
NOTA BENE:
If you have a “configured.txt” file located in “soas0731″ directory, be sure to delete it prior to making a zip file.
!-!-!-!
Here is a fixed up version of the start bat and required files for you. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6668212/SOAS-WORK/soas0731_FIXES.zip
Just make sure to copy in the RegionConfig.ini into the Diva-r#####/bin/regions directory. This will keep it consistent with previous versions for UUID, X,Y Locations.
PS: RL Grid is very busy ATM and I am not really able to put a lot of effort or time in to help you right now but hopefully mid June or so I’ll have free time to do a few things.

you guys are the greatest! i do like the two version idea and several people have created them and there is room for other websites too
i’ll be messing with it though and if i get it all going, then i’ll add another link
the region thing is actually an easy mod and the kind of thing that is easy to cover in a blog post. having an interested noob go in and make those config changes is a great way to boost confidence
next task is to create round one of faqs and to use restraint in their details
thanks guys, SoaS should continue to be an easy way to dip the virtual toe in the virtual sea =)

wow WhiteStar! i type so slowly (especially on a borrowed iPad)
i will lay in your work and, as soon as it’s running, place that version online (hmm, maybe call it the ‘rockstar’ version!!! =p
thanks WhiteStar! =)

looks like fancy version of sim-on-a-stick will need deeper digging – i followed your instructions WhiteStar and had the same results as when i first made the 0.7.3.1 update – when i select one region, it asks some initials questions that were already answered in it’s setup:

this can surely wait and there’s no hurry, although your features are pretty handy =)
