sim-on-a-stick 0.7.2 & robots

a really neat thing for OpenSim 0.7.2 is the addition of full on robot chubbies, oh wait . . . that means something nasty i believe (my humour never made it to sophomoric, it’s still pretty much middle school) =p

non-player characters, or bots, open up some neat possibilities from university campus guides to zombies (i bet there’ll be a lot more zombies!). plus 0.7.2 sees many fixes and in Diva’s build, which is what the stick contains, she has fixes beyond 0.7.2, so you can be totally cutting edge and be envied by others =)

Diva explains her additions in her 0.7.2 announcement (including a reworked wifi admin panel) and her Friends and IM over the Hypergrid

the update to sim-on-a-stick also means a new web page and coincides with the new officially endorsed and approved USB stick – the Corsair Survivor. several post over the last week (well three) looked at some common things i expect an OpenSim stick to do plus address its funkadelicious form factor =D

sim-on-a-stickthe Corsair inspired the new graphic on the sim-on-a-stick site in two ways – one is its total mechanical, maybe even pseudo-steampunk look, and secondly as a famous US World War II fighter plane. the latter is what the pose is all about which is termed “nose art” and typically were images of pin-up girls painted on combat planes’ noses (i feel so complete now!)

anyway, all this to say the 0.7.2+ version is available online and if you find any errors, like in the BAT file, let me know

as always, i am grateful to Diva Canto for her work as an OpenSim core developer and the creator of the Diva Distro (and she is a very cool person too), to Roger Stack for his tutorial on building the stick version (i refer to his video for every rebuild of this), and to DreamWalker for the nifty BAT files and for being my longest running virtual world friend – if it had not been for her running into me inSL four years ago, i would not be in virtual worlds today

have fun, be creative, and share your stories about how you use the stick – you’ll inspire others and maybe even make a real diffrence in this world of ours – namaste  =)

  1. 1. robot chubbies
    — that’s exactly what popped up in my mind, too…so you’re not alone.

    2. more zombies
    — NPC zombies just made my year. Does it come scripted for damage and homicide and brain eating because that would be awesome!

    3. great work!

  2. Awesome, downloading as we speak :)

Just curious what the “+” refers to (0.7.2+), or is that just a reference to Diva’s additional goodness as opposed to vanilla OS?

  3. I keep having this recurring memory image whenever NPCs are mentioned. Those old MGM movies with Charleton Heston and Elizabeth Taylor set in ancient Egypt. The scenes of the building of the pyramids with all those labouring slaves, that orchestral score playing da-da-daaaa-da, dah dah-DAda, dada da-daaaa

    Okay, I’m old *grins, chuckling*

Downloading the new SoaS now :-)

  4. well Clover, you should be able to script them for damage. itr may mean actually scripting an object that detects damage. i think it’s Avination that has a role playing module that shows damage like that

exactly CiderJack! Diva rolled in a the extra fixes after the official release so it has like two weeks of added development in it =)

inSL you can have damage to an avatar if that is turned on for the region. i had zombies in the catacombs of our SL municipal park and had damage on and you’d die quickly (for me it was mainly due to my own ricochets!) =)

and pfft on you Sarge! an old man my @$$!!! you’re only as old as your avatar is and your avatar is busy like a maniac building Excelsior Station!

and “da-da-daaaa-da, dah dah-DAda, dada da-daaaa” is totally the Imperial Death March from Star Wars! =D

  5. Man, the only time I allow the zombies to give damage is on the Minecraft server I manage. I can’t imagine why anyone would eff with zombies if they weren’t forced to…

    *cough*

Seriously, Zombies in SL/OS? I must be missing out on something here, but given this context I’m not so sure I mind so much…

  6. Oh and by the way…

“da-da-daaaa-da, dah dah-DAda, dada da-daaaa” is totally the Imperial Death March from Star Wars!”

hm-hm-hmmmmm-hm, hmm hmm-HMmm, hmmm hm-hmmmmm is what it sounds like if you don’t know the words…

  7. I never claimed to be musical, even in my own mind! *laughs*

But just imagine sims that recreates those scenes! Add in HG capable vessels and you’d have metaverse tourist traps!! Heck, just consider the marketing opportunities for cheesy Tshirts and coffee mugs alone!

  10. hmm, it looks like i’m getting the correct links; the top one should be:

and the second one (with viewer should be:

  11. My bookmark to SoaS goes to the new one. The link in your article and on the right sidebar both take me to the old one.

  12. Sarge, try refreshing the page. It is most likely to be a cached version of the webpage on your computer. I had a similar issue but am familiar with the problem.

    Hope it works for you.

  13. Oh, I wasn’t having a problem, Nick. I had already downloaded a copy. Was just checking the links as a separate test.

Trying a page refresh as a test …

And the refresh put up the new page.

  15. The new page appeared after a browser page refresh. Ener, were you going to test the D2, with the open simulator opensim using the taterunino build and aurora?

In the 7.2 D2 build, the avatar never appeared, even after restarting the computer and trying several browsers. With the open simulator opensim, the avatar appeared within a minute after the browser logged in.

One thing of interest is that both sims were able to upload a sketchup v8 exported collada.

  16. thanks everyone and thanks stiofain on the image, i had fun making it and going as minimal as possible

hi Joe, on a Windws 7 laptop, i get the default Ruth (i’ll put it in a post) BUT . . . others have told me of the same issue

have you tried creating new body parts? that should not be the issue since i have a Ruth but i don’t know what would be causing this for you and others

i tried both the one with the stick Imprudence and the one using my machine’s Imprudence. the rreal test will be on a machine that has never had OpenSim on it and i’ll see if i can snag a PC at work to try that on

  17. i got mine running but notice that in v2 clients they dont show the eyes. phoenix shows the eyes alright.

with this version, i want to get the oar/iar files together. maybe i will get clothing to my server by using imprudence since everyone that is in osgrid is using it. i had a lot of stuff from before when sl was not as restrictive, but i dont know where that is. maybe in an oar file?

i wait for the zombies but they didnt come.

    bristle

    19 Oct 11 at 10:54 pm

  18. thanks on that info on the eyes and viewer

your inventory things will be in an IAR file which you will need to export while you are logged in (only works if you can access the server though)

without server access, you’ll need to export each item via the viewer – not a fun thing, i spent about 5 hours inSL doing that when i left

  19. Hi! Has anyone tried to update (from the bin-folder)? I did, with a copy of course =) Result: it didn’t work for me. Updating and installing was fine. New start with the 3 clicks way okay (the version with 1 click is much more comfortable though), but the next step ended in several crashes. The avatar startet in more than 1 million meters height and then stuck at the simboarder. No chance to sit or teleport… Where is the mistake? Ideas? (Indeed there is no REAL need to update :-)

    Beacara

    20 Oct 11 at 11:47 am

  20. i have updated without any issues BUT that does not mean you are wrong

if you are able to log in, then it is some other conflict

there is no need to update, i am still running a one year old version of a dev branch of 0.7.1 which means it is not even 0.7.1 yet!

for your purposes, it would be safer and take up less disk space to create a fully new version and import your OAR and IAR files. your regions would then be identical in content and the IAR is only one file

before you do, open your inventory and search for WORN. that will show everything you are wearing including your shape and skin. copy all that you are wearing into a new folder called Beacara (for example) and then export your IAR

now when you import your IAR to the new you on your new version, you’ll just drag the Beacara folder onto yourself and tadah! =)

but there is no big reason to upgrade =)

  22. i went to the second inventory last night through their forum. actual i didnt remember my password but it could be useless since they dont seen to be in business.

anyone know if SI still works on opensims?

    bristle

  23. i went to 0.7.1 saw the eyes were not showing correct (v2). i also saw some almost invisible people walking around. before i think i create the avatar in 1.23 so i didnt know that. but i create a few avatars this afternoon and saw just the hair and nothing else. i change the body and they show up ok. but then i relog and found the same thing as before. i change the body and put on a trouser. then i went and relog and it was ok. i remove the pant, relog and it was ok.

so its not in only 0.7.2. there is something wrong with 0.7.1 but if you use 1.23 chances are you are not going to see it. but when you use v2, then it is different.

since i did it fast and using only v2 i didnt have time to test every case. i think it has to do with alpha texture, but i am not sure.

    bristle

    20 Oct 11 at 7:31 pm

  24. interesting results bristle! i only use the Imprudence 1.3.2 which is a 1.23 based viewer

i have had the invisiblle body issue both on the 0.7.1 stick version and what we have on our SimHost server

typically it takes relaunching the viewer for me, sometimes several times

your thought on alpha textures seems reasonable and this is a viewer issue with complications of graphic’s cards

    Ener Hax

    20 Oct 11 at 8:18 pm

  25. no, i wss mistaken. this is not alpha. for some reason, i had two ruthed avatars today. when i put the shape, skin, and clothing, everything was fine. the eyes too. with v2, the eyes are not right.

    bristle

    20 Oct 11 at 9:39 pm

  26. hmm, i wonder what it is because there are times – both on the 0.7.1 of the stick and on our server – that all i see are my eyes and my attachments (hair, boots, wristbands) but i don’t see my body or my clothing like socks and shirt

    Ener Hax

    21 Oct 11 at 7:21 am

  27. the attachments are seem differently. you can see that if you have body alpha, you are invisible except for attachments. or have parts of you body, usually the legs. that is cause by alphas but i have seem a lot of phoenix viewer people that look like alphas but they can be alright if they change any part of their clothing. if you look at them with 1.23 client you dont see that.

if you seen your body as alphas — invisible — chances are you alphas inside on. if you turn off you alpha, you are ok. if you dont have alphas, then change your clothes.

unfortunately, to check you need several clients.and now i am getting some textures not showing up in v2/v3 but only on my property. this is in second life so i dont know what is going on. once again, if i use 1.23 everything like fine.

for the eyes, i dont know what to do. we know that eyes are fine with sl with v2/v3. but jessica eyes are only good for 1.23 for 7.1. i will check osgrid to find out more.

the worse is ruth. she is completely wrong. on v2 she is invisible except for her hair. on 1.23 is looks complete, but really isnt. i suspect that is true for 7.2. but if you dress up ruth, she would show the problem any more.

since the grids are using 7.2, i will concentrate with that.

    bristle

    21 Oct 11 at 12:03 pm

  28. first, i would expect everyone to go to 0.7.2. i have problems with 7.1 with creating and texture characters. i did not have the problems with 7.2.

first, 1.23 should work ok, except ruth has a default skin texture. everything works fine.

with v2, the shape is not skin texture. that is fine too. also if you if you skin texture, it will look fine. the problem is in kirtens, but the new one should be ok. i used an older one because i was meshing. so v2 should be ok. for v3, i havent tried.

    bristle

    21 Oct 11 at 1:16 pm

  29. okay so from what you say bristle, i should create an avatar fro sim-on-a-stick so as not to rely on Ruth since she no longer is in the new viewers

gee, i should have done that but it was like 2:30 in the morning and i had to get up at 6:30 for work =(

i’ll do that this weekend, thanks for explaining

on to alpha stuff – so i might have on an alpha layer like in appearance? i’ll check it out and i could have played with that in the past

thanks for very good explnations and getting me motivated to add an avatar! =)

    Ener Hax

    21 Oct 11 at 2:52 pm

  30. yes, get rid of ruth. also you can have the simona stick. its in there. what is missing is a lot of stuff that i had in an older sim. i used 6.9 and then went off somewhere and returned to deal with 7.1 for mesh. for 7.2 i am completely going to find what i have so i can have clothes and buildings.

but i am more interesting in mesh clothing and avatars. here is what an avatar look like with their bodies invisible except for attachment. watch how easy it is to get into a character

kind of sucks because i tested on it last week and it was fine and i’m wondering if it could be a Windows update i have? i think i got for .NET thing this week =(

i’m going to rebuild the stick on my Win 7 laptop and see if that fixes it . . .

[...] i found a few Youtube videos on the exact motherboard i have and watched those this afternoon and that helped me do the first few steps – placing the CPU on the board and the RAM. both were easy and the videos let me know exactly what to expect (like push hard until it clicks – true for PCs and dating!). i kept touching my bare foot to the water radiator as my anti-static dealio as well as just being overly paranoid in general. then i placed the power supply in the case and since it is a Corsair power supply, it easily fit into the Corsair Case (Corsair is the brand of USB stick that is the aluminum cylinder that Ener was posed on as a nose art girl) [...]
