selective details or simply obsessed

i can’t help myself and need intervention! in making my little platform hut for my island home, i decided to have window shutters and a door that can swing down. that way, if a monsoon comes i can stay dry

the window shutters i was able to prop open with nice simple prims in a way that gets the point across, but the door! good grief, i can’t seem to help myself with pulleys and made a coconut shell pulley because in my head this is what the door needs. i know intellectually that no one will care or even notice, but some things i simply have to indulge myself and make “realistic” for my own piece of mind (maybe i watched too many Gilligan’s Island reruns!) =D

politely, we call those things idiosyncrasies, but they are really irrational obsessions that give us a sense of personal pride. i know that i will look at it and smile and that justifies it enough

what about you?

what do you do pay attention to in virtual worlds that you know no one else will even notice? =)

*i wonder if i get a prize* =)

  1. I obsess over pretty much every detail and every texture of every prim I make. It’s a sickness to which I have no cure so I can relate! Your new region is looking fantastic though:)

  2. I’m the same. For me, it HAS to look like it works, even if its a fusion engine or stardrive. If you visit Misfit’s Folly some time you’ll see what I mean. I’ve got tanks full of water as reaction mass which lead to smaller tanks that are bubbling away as the water molecules get split into hydrogen and oxygen. I’ve also got tanks of algae that are used to scrub the atmosphere and recycle the water at the same time. :-P

Geez, even writing about it I get detailed :-D

  3. i think i am still in a limbo between SL’s prim minimalism and OpenSim’s larger limits – it’s hard to let go of that stingy building practice from SL

but when i do, i feel so bad in a great way! =)

  4. I think working under SL’s prim limits is an excellent trainer for building. It teaches us how to do more with less. Keeps our builds from getting ‘sloppy’. :-)

  5. “i wonder if i get a prize* =)”

Yes. Prok will perhaps devote a line to this fact. You didn’t specify “nice prize”!

Speaking of flickr, thumbnails are a great thing, it instantly allows easy preview of images requiring further investigation.

islandHutLadder_002 is fantastic. With some light/shadows in the ol’ Zen viewer, it would rival any AAA game’s screenshot.

  6. Nice hut, Ener! Maybe you should make a Gilligan’s Island sim ;)

I like realistically moving things that reflect RL, but I also like the freedom to make “magical” things, like doors or secret walls that fade in and out automatically.

  7. Selective detail is good. The hidden gems that no one else notices directly but create a bit of magic.

  8. thanks Breen on the spcific image, once the island is done, i’ll do a set of pics in Zen and take note of that particular one and angle

i’ll keep an eye out for Prok’s prize! =)

wow DreamWalker – looks like your booty has gotten bigger or it’s just those pants! =p nice video too! =)

magic! that is the best way to describe it! nice! *fist bump*

  9. I’m 2 affected by details, My soul Mate knows how much i push her, regarding things that are not matched nor aligned and so on!
In fact that’s why we do a great team job:)

  10. nice team work ZZ! and i suppose it does make a difference – even if no one explicitly notices, it affects the overall “feel” of an entire build (or outfit or hair, etc) =)

  11. [...] asks.. selective-details-or-simply-obsessed ? in a recent post. Well, a bit of each probably. I have spent many hours positioning some prims [...]
