seeing my freebie is an awesome thanks

this blog’s rambling nature is supposed to just be my bumping along in virtual worlds with the hopes that it might inspire others to give them a try. it really went into OCD daily spaz mode when i left Second Life and started in OpenSim. my first OpenSim experience was such a huge disaster and challenge, and i almost quit. i have stated this before and it is true: i cried on and off for the first six weeks that i was 100% in OpenSim! it was so frustrating – no inventory, no understanding of hardware limits, and no outside guidance as to what to expect. it really is a wonder i stayed in!

at one point i was having to restart the server every 5 minutes just to rez out prims while building! man, that was bad . . . =(

things are way better now – OpenSim has improved a lot and so has my understanding of hardware requirements. OpenSim and its viewers are heavy 3D applications and take a lot of resources

sometimes i need to remind myself at just how incredible it is to be able to have 20, 30, and even 40 people all simultaneously working in real-time on one 3D file. an OAR is just a file, just like a Word Doc. imagine being able to have 40 people simultaneously work on a Word Doc and see the changes live! now add colour, 3D, and weather and a sun, chat and voice, and holy cow! o_O

OpenSim is pretty awesome and my perspective on it is so positive and upbeat compared to two years ago

OpenSim ener-gises me and that ener-gy lets me do things like Sim-on-a-Stick (which is really propped up by many of you with your direct work on improving it) and also has spurred me on to start making freebies at enerhax.com. the freebies really aren’t so altruistic at all, i love to create stuff and the freebies gives me a way to rationalise that. it’s really more for me and my recreation than it is about giving back. well, a little of it is about giving back because that’s just something in my nature (but that really is my ego isn’t it, so it really is a selfish thing – lol, see what 12 hours of college psychology will do!)  =p

another thing that ener-gises me is you – your comments here have educated me greatly and are a huge part of why i enjoy OpenSim so much =D

lastly, seeing things like this freebie trash can in use just makes me walk on a cloud – thank you casias falta (a power creator from 3dcolab) for taking the time to share a picture of a trash can being used at Spaulding Court in Virtual Detroit (take a look at the video on that page, it’s a nice piece to show how OpenSim can be used for city redevelopment modelling)

you made my day, my week, and probably my month (i really am that spazzy & sentimental) =)

might be garbage to you, but it’s a smile to me – image © 3dcolab.com

  1. I will do some pictures honest I will, I expect I’ll have some time to sort that out soon. The wheelie bins were something I had been meaning to do for about 3 years, so a very welcome download. The skid steerer thing turned up the same day I made a landing craft, and it fits just nicely. Apparently people buy mil surplus landing craft for engineering work. They even paint them yellow sometimes.

  2. I love your website and it’s the one I’ll visit to get my treasure of cool freebies. Looking forward to more of your creations. Keep up the awesomeness.

  3. three years! there must be a lot of litter strewn about with no trash cans around! with the success of rubbish bins, maybe i should offer my dumpster as a freebie!

what a load of garbage! or one avatar’s trash is another’s gold! =D

Eros, you are a power user and as such you are the awesome factor! i personally appreciate you sharing your adventures and perspective with you blog – it adds to the overall knowledge of OpenSim =)
