running Diva’s Wifi Admin Panel

Sim-on-a-Stick is convenient and with over 15,000 downloads it’s also being used a lot

while i am the one with the simonastick.com website and i make new packages of it when updates come out – it’s not my product

all i do is try to keep it up to date (within a week) with the latest D2 Distribution of OpenSim. i follow Roger’s tutorial and Diva Canto’s instructions and end up with the new version

i then make a new graphic for the SoaS website to help differentiate each version and upload the two “packages” – one as a installer-driven version and one as a zipped set of files

that makes it easier for people to try than installing it themselves. i’ll use myself as an example, i’m not techie enough to install OpenSim on my own machine, even the OSgrid preconfigured one was too hard! that version installs easily and placed a region on OSgrid for me, but i never figured out my router =(

SoaS is meant to be easy

the downside is that you are stuck with having Simona Sim as the main avatar. you can create other accounts, but Simona will always own you! (you are pwn’d by Simona!) *muahaha*

creating other accounts is easy if you have everything started up properly

  1. start MoWeS and Allow access if you are prompted to (see images below)
  2. start OpenSim (try OpenSim.32BitLaunch if the Wifi panel fails)
  3. open a browser (or click the handy shortcut in SoaS) to http://127.0.0.1:9100/wifi

that’s it!

if that poops out, maybe you have an older version of SoaS where the Wifi panel would be: http://127.0.0.1:9000/wifi (note the port difference of 9000 versus 9100)

Apache must be running for Wifi to work. it’s not necessary for Apache to run in order to use OpenSim and build in-world, but it is needed for account creation

firewall warning

typical first warning when MoWeS starts up

firewall warning

typical second warning from MoWeS

MoWeS

both need to run – Apache for Wifi and MySQL to store accounts

firewall warning

typical system warning from OpenSim.exe

Wifi

whoomp there it is! =)

  1. [...] running Diva’s Wifi Admin Panel – sep 24 adding accounts to SoaS [...]

  2. “SoaS is meant to be easy”

    It is. What is not easy is the issue of outside communication, and ADSL routers are the issue. Many just do not allow the method of network communication that a self hosted server requires.

    I don’t which to be critical of the Opensimulator project, but this is one area where I am critical of Opensimulator project. Things have improved, but what we need are a shortlist of “go here and buy this ADSL router and then do this”.

    My recommendation for now is:
    1. Go here: http://opensimulator.org/wiki/NAT_Loopback_Routers and see if your modem is on the supported list.
    2. Buy a secondhand modem from your fave auction site, or buy end of line new
    3. Be prepared to fail a couple times.
    4. Use cable connections. No wireless.

  3. Using the console commands, a person can create a new avatar of their own (use create user), delete the regions included (use delete-region) and add their own regions (use create region). But create your avatar account first.

    http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Server_Commands

    Also, in the MyWorld.ini file, at the bottom

    [WifiService]

    ;; The Wifi Administrator account
    AdminFirst = “(firstname)”
    AdminLast = “(lastname)”
    AdminEmail = “admin@localhost”
    AdminPassword = “(password)”

    where (firstname) is your avatar’s first name, (lastname) is your avatar’s last name and (password) is, well, your password. This gives a person full admin control via Diva’s WiFi Admin Panel :-)

  4. so Sarge, can you change Simona Stick?

  5. Change her, no. If you mean change her name etc, I don’t think that is possible without editing the database itself.

    Using the console, I created my Sarge Misfit account, deleted the Simonastick regions, deleted Simona and then created new regions with me as owner under my Estate. I then deleted the info in the RegionConfig.ini file and replaced it with the info from my new region *.ini files

  6. boo on Sarge! who wouldn’t want to be Simona! =p

    so in effect, your avatar is now the “master” avatar right?

  7. That’s right, Ener. Sarge is large and in charge! :-D

    To be honest, the only reason I deleted the Simona account was for neatness. I was tempted to keep her and use her for testing weapons on, but something about that didn’t seem right. So, she’s off in Metaverse Heaven and I shoot up Atrocitus Imperix instead *chuckles*

  8. hmm, thanks Sarge! and no offense on Simona – she’s a tough cookie and there is an army of her out there (maybe 15,000 Simonas!!!) =)

    thanks for explaining your changes, sounds like a good post because i get many people asking how to change her

  9. There is one problem left: Using another viewer your new account will stay a cloud. The workaround is to prepare an OAR or IAR, log in with the old Imprudence, upload and create an Outfit-Folder and change everything, shape, clothing, BALD BASE, EYES! Afterwards the Avatar is showing properly.

    Btw: I packed with Singularity and the old and nice Opensim batchfile, because some of my users could not find the .exe, because the suffix in the bin- folder is not showing by default.

  10. Beacara, I’ve found that simply creating new eyes and wearing those will de-cloud an avatar. And there’s also things to wear in the Library.

  12. the avatar cloud is the big issue right now for v3 viewer. last time i used bristle and logged in to soas and osgrid. i thought osgrid was ok, but i forgot i have changed myself a long time ago. this is i used pucko and he didnt change — he was still an avatar ghost.

    so i think it is a problem for all opensim when you are using v3. change “this or that” is a work around but not for the future.

    i wonder if inworldz has this problem.

  13. inworldz has the same problem.

    if you use 1.23 you dont have to worry. for v3, you have to know a workaround. i like the idea that misfit use because you can save a lot of time doing that.

    i found it necessary to go into 1.23 and dress up and then go into v3. but that is no good. eventually i wont be able to do that.

  14. I had a similar issue with Kokua, Bristle. Turns out, V3 viewers use HTTP INVENTORY to fetch the inventory. I’m not able to get online to find where the setting is, maybe under Advanced or Develop, but look around and make sure that it is enabled.

  15. @ Sarge: I hoped it might be that easy, but no, it is not. You always get the message, that you have to wait until your clothing and shape are loaded. And then you can wait for hours and nothing happens. …

    For me it is the only way to start with Imprudence, edit the avatar (seems especially the eyes) and afterwards change to Singularity or CoolVL.

    And no, better not delete Simona, maybe she’s a useful visitor from time to time to control some permissions.
