all the talk of megaregions should be seen as additional options being added to OpenSim and not a change per se
megaregions have been possible for a long time now and Diva’s D2 Distro comes as a 2×2 megaregion. what is being added (thanks to Kitely’s Oren) is support for the export and import of single OAR files representing those megaregions
currently, if you have a megaregion, you have to export each 256 metre region’s OAR as an individual file. it isn’t a huge pain in the butt, but with a 4×4 region you have to do 16 OARs. if it’s on something like Sim-on-a-Stick, then you have to go into the OpenSim command console and do change region and save OAR 16 times. since command console windows remember your typed command, you can save out 16 OARs pretty quickly using your arrow keys and typing over a few characters. but one file sure will make it easier to do and easier to archive
the more easily you can backup your work, the more likely you will! ;)
backup, backup, backup . . . in my OCD opinion, you can’t back up enough! and i think it is also your responsibility to backup your work. if you are on a commercial grid, i think it is okay to expect the provider to do backups but, ultimately, it is your work and on your shoulders. even in a walled garden like Second Life a few years ago, you could back up your work as an XML export (not sure if that is allowed inSL anymore) =\
i know most of you do see your OpenSim work as valuable as “real” work and do back it up. to me, OpenSim creations from clothing to art galleries to 16 region role playing grids are just as important as Apple’s patent on the iPod! *that’s right – i just said you are as important as Apple!*
build well, explore the new possibilities coming with easier megeragions, and have fun!
