oil makes the western world go around. i guess it makes the entire world go ’round!
in the US, oil is consumed at many times the rate of the rest of the world. however, things are changing and alternative fuels are becoming more serious and possibly will start displacing this thirst for oil
even if the world weens itself from oil for refining into petrol, diesel, and heating oil – oil will still be needed into any foreseeable future
not for combustion but for all of the plastics we use. sure, there are bioplastics (from pea starch) and that will work for some things. but everything from carpets to tiles to clothes to mobile phones all use hydrocarbons in some form or another
oil – it’s here to stay; for a while anyway
as we find new ways to obtain oil (like the oil sands in Canada) we are also using more energy to get to that oil
what used to take a barrel of oil to get 100 barrels with oil drilling is now taking 5 barrels of oil
in the case of the oil sands, it takes 20 barrels of oil to produce 100 barrels of oil. eventually it will take 100 barrels of oil to produce 100 barrels of oil, that’s when the oil hits the fan and we have to abandon it as an energy source
until then, i am doing my part to insure that we have enough vegetable oil for making biofuels *another order of poutine please* =D
