my fave build, now free – Victoria Arduino 1905 Espresso Machine

if you’ve been reading this blog for the last few years, then you know my most cherished build is my espresso machine inspired by the 1905 Victoria Arduino

it was introduced in 1905 and became an instant hit with the most exclusive luxury hotels in Europe. they are massive machines capable of something like 200 cups of Espresso per hour! they are built so well that many original 1905 built machines are still in operation today! i had the chance to see one in San Fran went i went to a conference in the fall of 2008 – it was still in daily use at a restaurant

when i "arrive" =)

when i “arrive” =)

the company is still around to day and if i ever make it big in life, i will buy one of their home models. the big models are around $15,000 – $20,000 USD and i think the small home ones (right) are $2,500! like i said, if and when i make it big . . . =)

for now, i am content with the one i finally made two years ago in OpenSim

well . . . almost content!

i spent two hours today fine tuning it using sim-on-a-stick and am offering it as a freebie. the original one i made was silver but this one i decided to make in brass. brass and gold don’t look that hot in OpenSim but i think it came out fine

it is prim heavy with 190 prims but that includes some cups, napkins, and a sugar jar. i went crazy with the prims, there is even a new pressure gauge (i was worried about you getting hurt) that is made from prims (that’s just crazy!) =)

i worked a little on the poor eagle and he looks a bit better but it may just be best to think of him as an artistic interpretation of an eagle (read: mesh would sure look better!) =p

when i first made it there was interest in it and i hope that some of those people are still in virtual worlds and will enjoy this unique piece

so while i wait to “make it” in the world, and perhaps you too – we can sip on a cup of virtual espresso and seize the day – seems appropriate to have an Italian made espresso when saying carpe diem! =)

flickr set with both the first version and now this freebie version

here’s the link to it on the Ener Hax freebie site: Victoria Arduino 1905 Espresso Machine

  1. That’s going into my place on Excelsior Station AND Misfit’s Folly :-D

  2. hey there! thanks Sarge!

you know, in order to be a good marauder and misfit, you need to be on your toes. it’s a little known fact that vikings, space aliens, and pirates all fuel up on espresso before starting a particularly adventuresome day! (sorry Red Bull)

  4. excellent! and do feel free to modify it and remove prims if you want – there are a bunch of prims just in coffee cups! and some details could certainly be gone and still have the feel taht it’s a espresso machine – i bet it could be brought down to under a hundred pretty easily!

have fun and thanks for letting me know! that spurs me on to do more! w00t! =D

  6. nothing takes the chill off of a drafty castle morning like a hot cup of espresso! =D

too much espresso though makes for shaky aim of the catapults, so moderation is important!

  10. hey Montnegro! that’s a good flavor for mornings! =)

how goes your big project? =)

what is that arduino thing? like a mini motherboard?

netduino? maybe you could make grid-on-a-duino or something?

  11. plenty of ground with the netduino but i dont think i can build a compete machine for the virtual coffee since i want to use the point-base graphics. i would have a lot of grounds to do that.

  12. Is there a donate-button anywhere? I want to send 10 €. When 250 other Ener-fans will follow, a dream will come true! :-)

  13. hi Beacara, if you want to make a donation, i added a button on the sidebar to the OSgrid donation page

    http://www.osgrid.org/index.php/donate

or donate to your favourite viewer group =)

that would be nice, and thank you for looking at this espresso machine =)

  14. I see Arduino and Netduino (and other things) featured on Make: ( http://blog.makezine.com/ ). I’ve seen them used to make all sorts of things, like robots made from Lego, club light displays, a huge variety. They are controllers, programmable from your computer. Btw, Lego gets used a LOT! *chuckles*

hmmmmm ….. maybe there’s a way to use scripted objects to send instructions to a RL machine. Perhaps to set up the task programming.

If I only had a RL workshop :-D

  15. Beacara, use IndiGoGo to set up a crowd-souce fund :-D

And they’re the ones Oatmeal/Matt Inman are using for the Bear Love Good, Cancer Bad Fund. :-D

  16. @sarge

what i havent tried yet but could be interesting is to create parts in a 3D software and import into sl or opensim. then have a machine that can fabricate into stuff.

then i could have an coffee maker built according to my specifications. this is the prefab method but used to build components from parts rather than a whole object.

isnt that better than a rl studio? and cost less too.

  17. If there is an application that would read a Linkset’s XML export from OpenSim and pass the info on to a 3D printer, you could design and build virtually, then export the finished object to be created in RL.

I wonder if Make has ever had a 3D reader featured. A person could 3D print, carve, weld, whatever in RL, then scan it into a file to be imported into OpenSim
