hydro power in Enclave Harbour

in Quebec, everyone calls the electric company “Hydro” because almost all of our electricity come from hydro-electric plants run by Hydro-QuĂ©bec

hydro uses water and gravity to make renewable energy by spinning big turbines. this can be done with reservoirs and dams or fast flowing rivers. Enclave Harbor uses a reservoir that is fed by artesian springs and water runoff from Mount Ariel

this was a pretty fun build taking about 5 hours. it is very simple and blocky with the plant being just a cement box for the most part for an ultra utilitarian look and feel so that the focus is on the concept of hydro electricity (the turbines do spin) =)

Enclave Harbour has solar, wind, nuclear, and now hydro energy for use by students participating in subQuark’s environmental science activities. apart from being a conversation topic, hydro electricity explores what it means to be a renewable energy, the environmental and political concerns of river damming to create reservoirs (if one country dams a river, what happens to a downstream country), the carbon footprint in building super dams, dam safety and those living downstream, and maybe even talking about potential versus kinetic energy (yah, i be a science nerd) =p
