i’ve been diving head first into HTML5 during this week and learning lots of new things (like they don’t use DIV tags!?! holy kaw, that’s a big change!)
but anyway . . . while i’m fiddling around with that (i’ll likely change this blog over to HTML5 at some point) i’m also messing around with Google web fonts. that’s a way of accessing a large library of fonts (over 400) and using them on websites. you can even download the fonts for photoshop mockups and for dishing up directly from your website rather than the Google library
i just changed the sans-serif font of this blog to a Google serif font and wanted your feedback
this font should look like the font in the lower part of the image below, if not then the site’s CSS falls back to the old font
if you are seeing that font, is it easier to read? if you are reading from an iPad (like Mera), is it legible?
thanks! =)

I just checked it with my Iphone and yes its legible and yes its easier to read! Good font :)

(i was talking about the lower part, the google font. Your original text has fallen back on the CSS sheet, yes)

thanks Mera! traditionally, sans-serifs are supposed to be easier to read online but serif fonts are easier in print because the serifs create horizontal lines for our eyes to follow
the google serifs are nicely anti-aliased so seem to work well online =)

All I’ve done so far with html5 is some minor video testing.
I am kinda looking forward to playing more with it though.
But heck, I still fix code from some clients who insist on using 2nd generation WYSIWYG editors.
Html5 doesn’t use div?
Wow, I would miss that bunches!
I am more of a code developer than a designer. Mostly Php and server stuff.
Fonts are not something I get excited about unless you can’t read something.
Though I do notice other things that designers would never care about or notice.
I think, much of this stuff comes down to “hat fashion”.
Once one is past the basics of playing dress-up, -you have to ask-
What is the hat looks that looks best on you?
I can don a Top Hat and do a Waltz, but would just look way goofy in a baseball hat or a bonnet.

hey Araxie =) yeah, html5 is all abou semantic elements (i don’t know what that means but it sounds fancy)
neat on the PHP background, i used to do a ton of ActiionScript but flash is quickly going bt the wayside
i’d dnace with you if you wore a baseball cap or a bonnet =)

I’m seeing the system font (sans-serif) on your site. And in the pictures, I find the system one easier to read that Google’s serifed font.
Usually, on websites, you’d limit serif fonts to headlines or other special elements as a way to accent them. And keep body text sans-serif.

hmm, wonder what that’s about – i was just in the CSS making changes, maybe that’s the issue?
they do add an additional load into your cache and that’s a negative for them =(
i’m not fully sold on this paticular face (but i did just increase font sizes in comments and captions and the sidebar)
one reason for sans serifs on the web is the 72/96 dpi action and no anti-aliasing. verdana and trebuchet were made specifically for the screen and since most websites have to rely on the user’s machine to have the proper font (or a few in that family), it made sense that everything was arial, verdana, georgia, helvetica, and that’s about 90% of the web!
i think google fonts and high-density screens (kindle’s 209 ppi and iPhone’s 326 ppi) will change that and we’ll see more sefifed fonts
btw, trivia on serifs – they are from stome chiselers who angled the start and exit points of letters to reduce stone cracks! =)

Ok Ener- My Avatar’s Prim bonnet is in development (just for that dance ;). Is there a script for the Waltz?
In a proper universe I’d work more with designers,
Those guys can spot font differations on any given Tuesday.
(where is this proper universe thing?).
Sometimes, I feel so blah, I’ll link some ecommerce system to 3 different back-ends, implement openssl, make all the magic work securely over 3 different databases, & multiple gateways.
I’ll make custom backends that are way out of the norm,
but what do I get worried the most about?
The fact that I used a Times Roman font and didn’t use “insert pet font here”.
I hate that!
I should really drive your lovely dozers (since I know how) for what little living I get out of that web rubbish.
So it is hard for me to see the importance of fonts.
Unless someone thinks that wingdings is the cat’s meow.

so can you do stuff like make account interfaces for OpenSim?
something like the screenshot in this post:
http://iliveisl.com/inventory-management-more-important-in-opensim/
and, if so, do you freelance?
