from prim-conscious to prim-nuts to prim-balanced

prims are always important to keep track of and while it isn’t as costly with OpenSim, it is still an important consideration (in Second Life it costs about 2 cents a month per prim)

Enclave Harbour is comprised primarily of science field trip locations but there is also the need for a few places for some non-field trip science activities. rather than create a strictly utilitarian spot – like a tutorial screen or kiosk – i thought it would be nicer to add a “fake” building to what is supposed to be a town

however, i can end up using more prims than i should because i like to wing it when making a building – i tend to want to have an interior space with some details – like plants and some furniture (plus ramps and railings). knowing that i can lose myself in creating a building i thought i’d give myself an arbitrary prim target. in this case i thought a sky scraper would add to the skyline and also offer some space for science activities

espresso_001editto keep myself in check i set an arbitrary prim allowance for this new building – 100 prims. in order to stay near that number i decided to make it a fake building that you can’t go into. to make it “fit in” yet still have space for science stuff,  i have a two level parking garage and level above that acts as a deck. the deck is easy to land on and offers lots of open space for future use

it’s not done yet and is 109 prims which is better than if i had not set a limit

for me this is the proverbial pendulum that went from being extremely prim-conscious in Second Life to going prim-nuts when i first started with OpenSim to now trying to be more balanced (this building is the same number of prims as my espresso machine!) =)

  1. Aah, but an espresso machine is FAR too important to skimp on prims!

  2. oh it looks fab!! and not many prims either- good work. The sim i use myself in osgrid – I have used about 400-500 prims on that one :O) Im very very cheap when it comes to prim usage, even if i could i dont use much normallly. I dunno why? I need to analyze myself here :))

  3. So, there is one good thing about having spent time in SL. You become prim stingy by habit :-D

    Good builds, Ener :-)

  4. Oh Ener, everything looks just wonderful! I was just saying to my friend Linda today that I think I went overboard on the house I just built in OSg. It’s over 800 prims, and that’s w/out furniture!! LOL!

  5. that must be one beautiful home though! i would not think that 800 is too terribly many – if the home makes you fell nice, then it is the right amount of prims! =)

well said ELQ! without coffee there would be very little in the virtual world! =)

you can’t jhelp being a minimalist Mera, you are Swedish just like Ikea!

thanks Sarge, it was an easy build because i used the Chrysler building as inspiration, so i did not need to think about shape or colours. and that leverages an iconic building so your imagination can fill in the rest =)

  6. It is very important to be prim conscious because of the extra stress that puts on the viewer, if nothing else :). The fewer prims, the more accessible a build will be.

  7. *kneels before OpenSim altar and chants “i’m not worthy”*

holy crap! hello Justin! (someone either gets excited easily, has had too much coffee, or both!) well what Justin says is gold in my book!

*nukes all builds and walks around region nekked!*

    thanks Justin! =)
