forget Simona Stick, use your own name for SoaS

i keep saying that i’m not very techie and people keep saying that i am. i am only techie enough to do what i want to do and no more. yes, i did build my own PC but using PCPartPicker.com ensured i would not have mismatched parts – which means all i did was follow some simple instructions and plug things together – not really very techie

same is true for Sim-on-a-Stick and here is proof – i am regularly asked if it is possible to change Simona Stick’s name and up until now, my answer was “i dunno, maybe in the MySQL tables?”. i have never explored what you can do with Diva Canto’s wifi admin panel . . .

i can understand wanting to change the name and i think of Kate Booth’s class and wonder how many boys have run around as Simona! =D

i figure it’s good for them, after all, how many times do girls have to run around as male characters in a game (Mario Brothers!!!)

thanks to a new blog contributor named Gench who outlined how to easily it is to change Simona’s name (i mean uber EZ) and then the subsequent testing by Shemira, i was brave enough to try it myself!

and it worked!!! =)

here are the steps outlined by Gench followed by screenshots – it only took a minute to do and i did this on a clean install of SoaS. i changed Simona Stick to Ener Hax and then fired up the viewer and the avatar was Ener, anything i built was Ener’s, and the region and estate were also Ener’s! =)

i believe that if you do this on an existing SoaS with stuff built that everything will be updated with the new name (what? me explore anything outside my immediate goals? pfft!) =p

Start up MoWeS and OpenSim as normal.
Once it’s running, open a web browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:9100/wifi
On the Wifi login page, type “wifi” for firstname, “admin” for lastname, and “secret” for password (no quotation marks)
Once you’re in, click on Manage Users in the main menu on the right.
In the blank under Retrieve users on the left, type a space and click Search.
On the list of accounts that comes up, click edit in Simona Stick’s row.
Type what you want for First Name and Last Name, and click the Update button.
That’s all there is to it. Fire up your viewer and log in with your new name (you may want to clear your viewer’s cache, since otherwise stuff may still show Simona’s name on it, but that’s just the viewer).

about 17,000 downloads of SoaS and it looks like Simona Stick’s virtual world domination may be coming to an end! kinda of funny to think that the most popular avatar name in the world is Simona Stick!

click MANAGE USERS

enter a space and click SEARCH

edit the default Simona Stick record

enter your new first and last name and click UPDATE

no need to do this, just showing that it did update

We are all Simona.

Thanks for the tip! Its good to know that we have the option but I like Simona. She has her own personality: a mysterious and obsessive builder. She needs to create a volcano lair, which as a bonus would be powered by geothermal energy. Go Green Simona!

(don’t mind me, I sometimes get ideas and disappear over the horizon with them)

I had to clear my cache in the Imprudence Viewer in order for things to be in my name and not simonas’. i guess sometimes when users change over and they see that simonas’ name still on everything they need to do the cache thingy, now I am owner of everything heheheheeeee evil laugh with glint in eye :). Have a nice and blessed day. Cache change in Prudence Viewer needs to be in the estate owners switch instructions too.

Alternately, in the OpenSim text box deal, just use the command “create user” then follow the prompts. You can make multiple avatars this way even.

This is great tip to change Simona’s name. I already create student names for a multiuser sim via the wifi. I have to admit I have become quite attached to the name Simona Stick (I also call it Simon on a Stick for the occassional sensitive boy student) and as I am working in many different classes, and reuse the USB’s, keeping the default name for single sims works well.

groups is now built into 0.7.5 (max of two, but i don’t know why anyone would use groups in SoaS since it is a one person deployment)

search would need an internet connection but SoaS is meant to be a standalone workshop

I have stumbled on a rather interesting bug with this method of changing Simona’s name. With Soas 7.4 I did this and changed Simona to Mykyl Nordwind, and all was fine – worked perfectly, but then I ran the Diva UPDATE.EXE to 7.5 and all seemed well too, until I started looking at things. Now when I log in as Mykyl Nordwind I have all of Simona’s inherent abilities as owner of the sim, but when I rez or create new objects (inworld as Mykyl Nordwind) and then edit them, Simona is listed as the creator and owner, but as Mykyl I have full ability to take them into inventory and to modify them as if I were Simona. I guess that Simona is here to stay no matter what you change – she is immortal! :) (Or perhaps we have merged into one being? Naw – I’m nowhere near as cool as she ;)

muahaha! you discovered Simona’s evil plans hatched with her artificial intelligence!

now that you know, you’ll be banished to an isolated world (oops, that’s what SoaS is!) =D

hmm, so even though you actually changed Simona’s name by editing what should be her name in the DB by using the Wifi admin panel, some traits from the original creation of Simona as the default avatar remain

so there are obviously places in the DB that store the record of Simona and the user name we see and login with simply points to those existing records

pretty interesting discovery you made with this – maybe no one is as cool as Simona, but you are pretty awesome in my book for uncovering this! =)
