Enclave Harbour’s terrain and Kitely’s region naming

pulling Enclave Harbour into Kitely was straightforward although it did take me a few tries to turn the 16 region OARs into one megaregion OAR. until 0.7.5 comes out, individual region terrain files must be exported and then imported with Kitely‘s Advanced Megaregion turned off (it’s probably a “best practice” to save your terrain RAW files as part of your archiving routine)

once that was done it was neat to look at the map and see only the terrain for 15 of the regions. all the prims currently stack up in the root region when looking at the world map, but the objects are actually in their proper places in-world

a minor change from having our own super duper server with SimHost (i do miss it) is that you can’t name your individual regions. Kitely uses your world name and applies Cartesian numbering for the regions (darn frogs and people named René!). with SimHost i had access to the server and each region had a unique name such as Enclave Harbour Energy, Enclave Shoals, Enerville, Enercity, and so on (Ener as in energy! *rolls eyes*) =D

having region names on the world map was handy, especially if that is what you have used in Second Life or OpenSim but for our purposes, maybe it is not important

our projected users will be students that most likely won’t ever have used a viewer

Enclave Harbour will have information kiosks so adding a map kiosks will be easy. and as one megaregion, having the map provide clickable teleport “things” should make moving around easy for students (imagine a little TP-scripted red ball floating above the desalination plant on the map). this difference means that i need to put map kiosks higher up on my To Do List than they were (this also impacts subQuark’s book because it was already written as “visit Enerville to explore the military landfill activity and play hide and seek” and “explore the floating community high above Enerville to discuss what the future might look like”)

hmm, since the SL map naming paradigm is broken, that means that a place like Enerville is no longer confined to being a 256 metre square, it could include adjacent regions, even portions of regions! *wow, i just blew my own mind* =p

another thing about Kitely’s region naming is that i should apply the same numbering to the multi-region versions of Sim-on-a-Stick. wow, that’s almost making it a standard! w00t! *adds this to the To Do List*

  1. Maybe that’s a service/feature that Kitely could add in the future, custom region naming for the megaregions.

  2. Well, that’s life, solve one problem and another pops up. It would get boring otherwise.

  3. Hi Sarge,

You can create parcels across the entire Kitely Advanced Megaregion (which currently doesn’t work with regular OpenSim megaregions). As you can name these parcels the region name is not as important as it would otherwise be.

  4. I know, Ilan, except in the WorldMap, which Ener has shown above. Parcel names aren’t normally shown on that map, just the region names. Its not much of an issue to me as the current setup fits an overall sci-fi future. But it would be nice for those who want “neighbourhoods” or some such to show on the WorldMap.

  5. spot on Sarge! the world map only shows region names

in the “old model”, this was a handy way of saying “the store is on the Enerville sim”

in the new model, you’d say “the store is on the Enclave Harbour 4.1 region”

    is it a big deal?

depends on the purpose of the grid. for us, since these are new users, they can be trained to use map kiosks that are in-world and completely ignore the world map

for others, the region name thing might be a big deal and there are 10 plus years of that being the SL paradigm that some people know and would naturally expect

  6. “I’d pay a dollar for that!”

I bet that people wouldn’t mind a minor charge being levied to custom name the regions of their megeworlds :-D

  7. Thank you for your input, we’ll need to see what is involved with getting this to work before I can provide any definitive reply.

  8. @ Ilan: Do your mods correct for dropping the inbound avatar to the correct location or does it still drop them in the SW Corner of a Mega ?

Noticed Oren committed fixes to OpenSim related to the Mega Regions Multi-Oar… Also seems that multi region oar can go beyond Mega’s and just do multiple regions in an instance which would be preferable as some of us do not do Mega’s.

  9. Hi WhiteStar,

You can teleport into any coordinate of a Kitely Advanced Megaregion.

Our OAR file format patches addressed both multi-region and megaregion modes. You can enable/disable Advanced Megaregion mode using our control panel. So, if you want to transfer your build to another grid that doesn’t support megaregions, then you can disable Advanced Megaregion mode before you export your world from Kitely.

You’ll get better performance and no region crossing issues on Kitely if you choose to keep Advanced Megaregion mode enabled, so I would really recommend doing that. When working with regular megaregions outside Kitely, you’ll still encounter the various known megaregion limitations so it’s a matter of weighing the pros and cons whether to use them or not.
