a great resident added a comment to our infamous penis post about her attempts to be classified as adult verified. according to Linden Lab’s adult policy info. my wonderful friend who creates beautiful places and has been isl for 4+ years should definitely be able to access Adult areas. here are her words:
Hey Ener, and hey to all. I’m an Enercity resident, have been for about 8 months, and am an old timer (nearly 5 years in SL). I have had payment info on file since I started SL, as in those days Basic accounts were not free, we had to pay US$10 and use a credit card/Paypal to pay, and give REAL name and address.
I have also been a member of SLX/XStreet since May 2005, using the site to sell my wares and buy and sell $L. I am, however, not verified to view ADULT stuff inside SL…
I live in Australia and am well past the 18yo age mark to be verified, LL has transaction records from me using my CC and Paypal… seems this is NOT enough for them to let me view anything deemed AO.
So unless they have allowed me access since I bought $L on XStreet (nope, just checked), that lovely FAQ page is a farce… it says
- I have to have used RL monies in SL *DONE*,
- to use a viewer higher than 1.23 *DONE*, and
- also to ‘Select PG, Mature and Adult from the Rating dropdown’ in the Preferences/General tab *CANNOT DO*
there IS NO dropdown in my Preferences, just the statement ‘I want to access content rated: PG and Mature’ O.o
So isn’t my money good enough? I really don’t wanna give any more info to LL than I already have, for my own paranoid reasons lol… Meh…
so if you are a Linden and can address this, please let us know what is missing here? this is terribly frustrating for many, many people isl. i hear similar stories from other non-US people. please shed some light on this. thanks
addition – from facebook, another similar experience:
I’m in the same situation. I will have been in SL for 5 years next month, they have my credit card and bank info, I owned 10 sims at one point, have sold thousands of USD worth of L$ but they can’t figure out that I’m older than 18. Oh well…
here are two helpful comments from whump via twitter:
- they should check to see if they are logged in before checking the preference. It’s inactive until you log in
- if the dropbox doesn’t display the choices they expect, then open a ticket through sl.com/support

There is always a way around adult verification if one wants to access a site badly enough.

Ok, update time. I got cranky with the lag that my Vista drive was causing in SL, so I went back to using my XP drive… OMG the difference in SL performance is phenomenal!! Everyone scrap Vista if you suffer lag in SL, use XP or Win7 (even though this is Vista based, alot of the eyecandy from Vista was scrapped and so runs alot faster). In doing this, I had to update SL, no biggy, but I had been usig the Release Candidate on XP prior to using the Standard Viewer on Vista. So I updated the Releas Candidate… and you know what? The options for PG, Mature AND AO were in the preferences!! And since I haven’t used the Standard Viewer to check if the options are now available, I can only assume that either LL took pity on me, or the options are only available to me through thr Release Candidate. So if you don’t have all the options, try the Release Candidate and post your findings. I’d be interested to know what the go is. The only reason I found this out was because a friend and I were invited to his friend’s sim and when I was sent TP it did not go through, the sim is AO. So just out of curiosity I looked at the preferences, and low and behold they were all available, so I selected ‘View PG, Mature and AO’ and was able to TP then… WOOT! I AM VERIFID… FINALLY!
