2014 changes for us

no big surprise but with our project changes, we downgraded our Gold Kitely account to their free one

unfortunately, this is a bit sad because it marks a change in what i have online. Enclave Harbour itself was never public and only a handful of people checked it out to provide feedback but the freebie store and Hax Nuit did see some traffic (97 hours between the two as outlined a few posts back)

the creativity that OpenSim offers is phenomenal, imo, and being able to build stuff has been a great outlet for me. sharing some of that stuff has also been important to me to help others find that same joy

so . . . what’s that mean for the freebie store?

luckily, David from InWorldz stepped up! =)

they will be offering some of it (or maybe the entire store) as part of their free content and they’ll make an announcement about that today or this week

EnerHax.com still has the OARs online but the majority of the stuff in the store is now exclusive to InWorldz for 2014

why InWorldz?

that’s easy – the biggest reason is David (Tranquility Dexler) who has helped me several times with mundane PC issues that were too techy for me (including issues that helped me get SoaS updates out). David’s just that kind of guy – if he can help, he will

there are two other reasons too – Sunny and DreamWalker – both are long time friends from way back in Second Life and both enjoy InWorldz

as to Hax Nuit?

i dunno, it saw good use (over 42 hours) but i’d really love to see it get used by groups that would add to it – add scripting (zombies!) or RPG stuff. maybe i’ll give it away (but it’s big at 35,000 prims!)

stay tuned . . .

  4. We’re very sorry to see you go Ener and wish you great success with your book project once it comes out.

May I ask why you’ve chosen to make your freebie store exclusive to Inworldz? You can easily keep it in Kitely on the Regular Account which includes a free Metered region and just limit access to yourself and Premium Account members. That way you get to host it in Kitely as well without being charged for the time other people visit it.

In addition, you’ll retain the ability to easily import/export content from your world and you’ll have a presence in a Hypergrid-enabled grid once we roll out full support for Hypergrid within the next couple of months.

  5. thanks Ilan – this was not an easy decision and i tend to look at the Gold membership as two lunches a month (which is not a big deal imo) but David (subQ) has a more level head (and typically more realistic)

i wanted to keep one world in Kitely and it looks like the free membership allows that (if i didn’t mess up on numbers again!) so Hax Nuit is more special to me than the store is and thus is the choice i made (i’m anxious to see what your yet-to-be-announced plans are)

i am more likely to expand upon Hax Nuit than the store

however, i did want people to have access to the store contents but not have to sponsor that cost (small as it is). i thought about making each item an XML and many already are and used to be online, BUT from what i understand, XML imports are getting flaky so it’s not worth the trouble to mess with it atm

i’ve known David (Tranq) for a few years now as well as have been dear friends with Sunny Whitfield (she is one of two, non-family, who actually know me irl)

Sunny has been in InWorldz for years and having something of mine in there makes me feel closer to her

so that’s the reason – mainly emotionally practical!

Kitely is still my recommendation for hardcore builders and if i still had the drive i did two years ago, i’d be all over 30 sims like mad!

  6. Thank you Ener,

As for the store, you can get another Metered region in a the free Regular Account you use for Hax Nuit by paying 10 KC / day = ~$1 / month. Your time working on creating and sharing XML files will probably cost you more. If you’re worried about paying for visitors to that Metered world then limit access to only Premium Account members (for which we don’t charge world managers for visits to their Metered worlds). As you prefer building in SOAS you aren’t likely to spend a lot of time in your Metered worlds so payment for your own time inside them is likely to be very low. If the $1/month is a barrier then just get another user on the Regular Account (Ener Hax_2) and use that account’s free Metered region to host the world.

If you want to make your content available to as many people as possible then you can also offer your content in Kitely Market for 10 KC per item (the minimal allowed price = ~$0.03). That way people will be able to have it delivered to any Hypergrid-connected OpenSim region (Gird or standalone) once we roll out the Kiltey Market Hypergrid delivery system next month. This will likely be the easiest way for people to get content into their grids/standalones of choice and you’ll get nice transaction records (and notification emails) to see how many people use it and what grids they take it to.

  8. “Ener Hax_2″

there’s only ONE Ener Hax! (and isn’t that more than enough!) =p

lol, that feels like gaming the system and it never occurred to me! i did use alts inSL for testing but never thought of them for something like this (seems like cheating)

i didn’t realise it would be a dollar a month and i’m also waiting to see what your other offerings will be

  9. This was an agonising decision and we spent three weeks going back and forth over it, and I’ve thought about this for six months.

The value that Kitely offers is unequaled and the performance is beyond compare, but the change in pricing is more inline with passionate builders and not our niche needs. The two free hours a month for free accounts was ideal.

As to Ener’s freebie store, I can say she’s thrilled to have someone that wants to host it.

I also look forward to Kitely’s new pricing in full and when Enclave is revisited, perhaps there will be a great fit!

Ilan and Oren’s work has been wonderful for the OpenSim community and I believe that has been well touted by Ener and that the value of Ener’s work in Kitely was a net positive for them and the community.

  10. Ener I wish you all the best as always and hope that things work out for you with the book & Enclave Harbour. May the new year bring you all the best !

I’ve reviewed the Kitely changes and they are very reasonable in my opinion… Given the amount of work that Ilan and the others put into making the Cloud Platform work so well, I believe they are in some way undercharging (comparatively speaking). I do have a clue or two in regards to building, managing & administering OpenSimulator on small & large scale, it’s not as easy as so many think it is. Far too many people (without technical background) want to jump all over Kitely and use Hyperbole and Postulation and even slanderous comments against them… Although that seems to be a certain mindset in the world these days.

One consideration for using a large cloud deployment like Kitely, is the availability / access worldwide and the performance gains that result to the end client. Cloud Systems shine because they deliver the content through the cloud to the local portal, as opposed to having to cross numerous hops to get the data (each being a point of failure [packet loss etc] which ultimately reduces performance & usability).

One big complaint / issue people have with Kitely is lack of Hypergrid… Hypergrid IS FLAWED with asset transfer’s, permissions issues etc… These ongoing issues need to be addressed and that also means getting all operational simulators out there running on the same level (Build/Revisions)… Many of the issues are because of dissimilar OpenSim Versions but also the “holes” within the HG system itself.

The concept for “EXPORT PERMISSIONS” was put forward originally in 2010 then again in 2012 REF: http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=5892 by myself. Kitely in part addressed that point within their own deployment of OpenSim and to their marketplace. The remaining requirement for OpenSim to incorporate that which was done long ago in Aurora-Sim by Revolution Smythe & Armin Weatherhax’ patch for viewers to make it work. So many lame excuses have been used to not do this, one has to genuinely wonder about the motivations of some. The lack of fine grained control means that Walled Garden environments will continue and the community fragmentation will remain.

The biggest issue with OpenSimulator or rather “stumbling block” is the requirement to use a “dedicated viewer” which has a steep learning curve and requires heavy computer resources. The most gain to be obtained (acceptance & adoption) would be to embrace projects like Pixie-Viewer the web based viewer. See http://pixieviewer.com/blog for more on Pixie Viewer. One only has to look at Cloudparty to see why the success is there… similar feel & comfortable for any previous SL/OS person BUT also being accessed by many without ANY SL/OS exposure who pick it up faster with ease. The Browser Based Viewer would be of tremendous benefit to the Educators & students alike, the casual visitor and more. That is roughly 80% market penetration / share that is not being tapped into as a result.

SOAS & Ener’s efforts to help educators & students use OpenSim are most commendable and as she has stated more than a few times, the viewer issues are one of the stumbling blocks. While OpenSim dither’s over these issues, Unity, Cloudparty & other platforms are filling the void and taking the potential market’s out of the equation…

Given that Unity is a commercial application that is NOT cheap, not easy to build on and yet 100′s of thousands of dollars are spent by institutions requiring simulators that can run in a web browser… Leaves a few thoughts / questions to ponder, doesn’t it.

Well… Happy New Year & Best wishes to one & all…

PS: Oculus, Sony, Epson and others are getting heavily into 3D glasses and 2014 promises a boom within the simulation software field. Even Lame Labs sees where the technology is headed and is looking to it…

  11. I know this is way out of the object being talked about Ener, but I have two questions to ask about simonastick. The frst question is, Why do I get this line when my simulator (box with black background) shows this line in red: Timeout detected for thread “Heartbeat (SoaS 2.4)”. ThreadState=WaitSleepJoin. Last tick was 6053ms ago.
I think this message shows up for all my 16 sims. Hope this will not harm anything, how do I fix it?

2nd question: Can I import dae. files into my simonastick sims?

Hope you have a wonderful Chhristmas and will have a HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!

My friend Steven downloaded simonastick today (12/31/2013), his first time. His Opensimulator32bit Application scrolls a few sentences and stops dead in its tracks. He has deleted simonastick about four times and still gets the same results. He even went to a different computer that has Windows 7 on it. He was thinking maybe Windows 8 on his hand held computer prevented the simulator from scrolling all the way down.

Thanks for being here when we all need your help with simonastick, I appreciate that. :)

  12. @Mira…

    1) Microsoft NetFrame 4 is required to run Opensim, 3.51 no longer cuts it. The latest netframe is 4.5 available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30653

    2) OpenSim.exe will work on 32 & 64 bit operating systems. The old OpenSim.32bit.launch.exe is still there but is not required to run opensim on 64 bit operating system anymore…

    3) The heartbeat msg is nothing to be concerned about, espcially during startup… it’s a timing delay during startup is all. Has no effect on operations once OpenSim is running.

    4) OpenSimulator handles mesh / DAE. Upload it with a compatible viewer with appropriate settings per the guides for using Mesh objects. REF: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh

NB: Do use a current version viewer as there have been many changes, some subtle and some not. Kokua (V3 ui), Singularity or Cool VL Viewer (V1 ui)… FireStorm-OpenSim may work but that’s yours to figure out.

OpenSim is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.0 & 8.1 with the appropriate Net Framework.

    Hope it helps.

  15. O M G !!!! I can’t believe it! You are MORE than welcome to setup a little workshop on my island in Inworldz Ener.

This makes me very happy. And Unhappily, I had to delete my island in Kitely but I will still deliver to people there :-)

I hope to see you soon Ener!
